BACKGROUNDS

Are most backgrounds 12 or 16 field?

Concerning Pans and Backgrounds
* if done on 12 or 16 field sizes would a right or left pan be 2 or 3 or 4 times the length of the size of the 12 or 16 field size (the depending on scene - action for the pan length to use)
* How are pans done in an arc - curved - circular? I mean if you start an arc on a 12 or 16 field size paper it seems to me you would run out of run out of background (before getting started) for the action of the character or characters and the same goes for curves and circulars.

I am not saying those types of pans can not be done on 12 and 16 field paper - I am saying I can not figure out how it is done.

It would be nice to have a dvd about this on how Mr.Bluth approaches the varying types of backgrounds in relation to the character or characters actions.

Having said that and wanting to work on some backgrounds does anyone have any books, video tuts or other relevant sources they can point me to for working with backgrounds and pans?
TIA

I just purchased a book entitled "Layout and Composition for Animation" by Focal Pres Ed Chertner. It is a good book showing the layout of different animated films, tips on perspective etc. It was about 19 bucks. Also check out the Disney Archive series books, there are two of them out now one due out in late November. They are excellent reference. Also see the Illustion of Life companion book, it came out about the same time. Most of the work has been reprinted at same size. The above mentioned animationbackground blog is excellent. Top rated. I have copied most of the artwork to a file to study.

The companion book..if called that, that came right out after Illusion of Life is called Treasury of Disney Animation Art by Canemaker and Abrams. It is long out of print and is more of a visual book than a teaching book then Illusion was. But I would recommend it if you can find it.

Hope that helps!

Yes this is the book, and I guess I date myself as I bought it new back about 1983 or so. It is very similar to the new Disney Archive Series. I have the first two. The animation book is fantastic. The other is due out on November 23.

dartzy thanks for clearifing the title of the book and macprofilms thanks for confirming that that is the book.

macprofilms - I read the info for the 3rd vol and that one sounds like it should show some interesting backgrounds. Thanks for the info on that series.
