Well done. You can try harder to get further improvement. :)

No real suggestions worth mentioning Josh. You've got some great stuff there. I especially like that duck guy... I'd like to see his adventures as they occur.
When considering animation... where I am at this stage is trying to focus on the elements of design that focus on straights and curves. The straights (the stretching and flat areas) generally being the area indicative of force while the curves (the squashing of masses) tend to be where secondary actions occur.
This is something that you could look at design-wise in your own work. Where are the action lines that communicate force (the straight lines) and how do they effect the rest of the design while in motion? If I could suggest only one thing to stress in your designs it might be to exaggerate some straight lines in your character work.
...and please... more duck!!! :)

Thank you Alex and Rodney. :)
Alex, you're totally right on. It's going to take me pushing though things until drawing becomes second nature.
Rodney, your points about "straight" vs. "curve" is super! I can see where some straights would help.
Yes, more Ducks are on the way. Thanks you two!

Rodney, you're totally right. It's going to take me pushing though, drawing until it becomes second nature, to get to where I want to be. If you have any ideas please send them my way. I'm sure others in the community would benefit greatly as well!
We are all here for the similar reasons (give or take a few) and I like the way you state that particular goal of having drawing become second nature. 'Pushing through' is a great way to frame the problem. It's an action... and that is what I feel so strongly we need to focus on in our work.
Perhaps one of the mistakes me make (in our attempts at both still imagery and animation) is to draw only one image when at a minimum the actions we are drawing require at least two.
Your drawing of the character leaping out of the swing comes to mind here... that's an action shot if there ever were one and you've conveyed that nicely in the ropes/swing and his pose. The character himself has a lofted feeling as if suspended in air. In his mind he's a superhero... he's as good as flying!
My thought upon seeing that one image moves to the unseen frames of that scene. The poses he was in before launching off the swing. The decent. The landing. While those images are never seen in this still image they have just happened or will soon happen. But the dilemma... how to capture those proceeding moments and how to project the future all in that one single pose?
I think Don could probably see it play out in his mind but for me I'd have to thumbnail out all those poses. While I can't see him clearly... I can see something close. A memory... an experience... a kid perhaps just a little too old to believe in superheroes. (in my fractured memory it's not a swing, it's a bicycle... that is a motorcycle... that is jumping across the city skyline... from roof to roof)
I'm not sure if you thumbnail your drawings before you commit to the final drawing. If you can, do that. Draw a series of drawing across the page capturing moments in that story. Then select the most compelling... or (in animation) capture them all.
Sorry... long winded way of saying I've enjoyed that first drawing of yours.
I was the character for a moment... living in a moment... but trying to push through. :)
very nice works you have jlokan9........keep it up and post more...:D

Gave drawing the "Pirate King" a try. He's hard! Lots of volume.
LOL. Fun but hard. :)
To be honest, I broke one of Don's rules. I only had an idea of what to draw, but didn't get a picture in my head until like half way through. The underlying ruff was pretty bad, not that this drawing is all that great, but I didn't really get to drawing until I started to picture it.
I guess Don's right about what works for me. Having the image in my head is the way to go. He's kind of off model, but I learned a lot.:)
Cheers ya'll!

Looking mighty good Josh.
I love your line work but am drawn toward your thumbnails and action poses even more. It may be the animation I see in those that is dragging me in.
Nicely done.

Thank you everyone! You are all so inspiring with your words and your own work!
hahaha go to bed is so funny is this a sleep deprived drawing?:D
Hi Andrew. Ha, yeah this one came from two inspirations. I'm a huge Calvin and Hobbes fan, so I'm trying to capture some of that. And then, yeah, it's about me turning into a monster, full of fatigue, telling my kids "go to bed"! LOL, so funny you figured that out!
is this from an animation? i really like this pose and design
Lavallelle, the angry space cat is as an action pose from a very simple story idea. To be honest, unfortunately I didn't have any inspiration beyond what was needed for just the one drawing. But, because of your comment, I might try taking a look again and see if there's a scene in there somewhere. Thank you. :)
I hope I didn't miss anyone's questions. If I accidentally did, I'm sorry and I'll get back to you ASAP. Thanks again everyone!

These studies look really good, especially the Milt Kahl ones and the hands. I'm really digging your Ink Rising illustration, however. The expression, pose, composition, and shapes of the hands really emphasize the emotion in that picture. ^5 :)
