I really need help with the "Satyrday" comic and I really appreciate if some of you said yes.

Can you post some of your drawings here?
Maybe you could write some of your ideas for the comic here as well.

Some of us would love to help. :)

So, I'm saying 'yes' but hoping you'll help as well.

Do you have a script?

drawings and script for the comic.

I want to see your comic finished more than you do at this point. :)
There is most definitely interest in the Satyrday story and characters.

Right now the extent of my knowledge in Satryday is the two images I've seen and Don's description of the basic story.

Do you plan to make this a four issue comic book series?
26 pages each?

Have you got Don Bluth's blessing to pursue this comic book idea?
(You'll go a lot farther with this and the lawyers likely won't have to be paid)

Should we assume this is fan fiction?
Is this an adaption of the movie that was never made?

Rodney

Okay...

Scrowl. (I've seen your drawing of him)

This is a character from a movie that Don Bluth started but cancelled it called "Satyrday" not to be confused for a day in the week.

Anyway, Scrowl is the Mutant Owl's half bat-winged dog/ half rat hybrid henchmen who trains the crows to do the owl's bidding (such as stealing the moon, of course.) He is also the middle child and the eldest son for a retired bat-winged dog singer and the rat daughter of the Robber King (See Martin Gates' The Snow Queen to see what I mean. [link] [link](1995_film)) He has an older sister named Kurda and a younger brother named Fenrir. Though he seems to be on and off friends with the satyr, Matthew, he tries to do the owl's bidding at the same time. He has a Carpie sidekick called Faso.

I'm going to make a four issue comic series.

Cool. We should only have to draw about 650 drawings (plus covers and promotional material).

Piece o' cake. :)

As Story is king, I look forward to hearing more about the the character's, their environments and their stories. Scrowl and Faso certainly appear to be interesting creatures.

I understand there is some plotline about stealing the moon?

What's your plan Lisa-Chan? You must have started at least six different threads indicating your desire to work on Satyrday. What have you got so far? Do we get paid for working? Do we get credit? What's your role?

Does anyone know what the difference between "a specific and complete full paragraph" and "a one liner" is?

Answer: About five years per comic book.

That's right, Rod! We've got to make a script and draw the comic when the script is done.

Rodney
04-08-2011, 05:54 AM
While you are figuring out the direction you want to take your script, I've got a few suggested 'working titles' for you...

These are all more or less sequel based and consider picking up where the unreleased movie leaves off. It's hard to write the first movie but it's possible to figure out where it left off.

'The Return to Satyrday'

'Satyrday Night' or other variations: 'Satry Daynight' for instance.

'Satyrday Night Fever'
Umm... okay... moving on...

'Moonday'
Takes place two days after the first movie.
The moon disappears... again!

'The Second Satyrday after the First'
Get it? ...the second story (this one) after first one (the original unreleased movie)

'Satryday's End'
This is an Epilogue that retells the first story while explaining why it never happened.

Or why only choose one?
Each of the above could be a chapter in your comic book.

Your turn.

Fryday (prequel to Satryday).

I wonder if Don has any storyboards to this film to inspire us.

Rodney
04-08-2011, 08:27 PM
Nice one Owen!

I was messing around with Fireday... Fyreday... but really wanted it to sound like Fri-day. Perhaps 'Fryeday', but I'm not sure what a 'frye is. I suppose we could define that.

Lina,
If you post I'll post. So keep those ideas flowing!

Here's a different 'chapter' idea; Satyrdaylight.
This is where three resourceful characters set off to discover where the Owl has hidden the moon. As they get closer their colorful talents magically set off a spectacular light show. Can they dampen their new and powerful gifts long enough to avoid the ever watchful Owl and rescue the moon? (If Lina doesn't write a script we may never know)

My apologies to Don for using two of his drawings when I should have just grabbed a pencil and monkey-see'd by way through. In creating this and considering Lina's goals I did get a better understanding of the impact Don's animation has had on the world.

Well I can help with the drawings if you want. I may be able to help edit the script but I'm not so good at writing. Also I think we need more information, All I really know about Satyrday is that it involves a mutant owl and has something to do with the moon. Since this comic is your idea Lina you have to be the boss, post some instruction and tell us what you want to do.

Lina,
It looks like you've got some movement going on there in your animation. Dialogue even. More power to you.

I'm curious where you got your dialogue.
"That was just getting interesting." or "I was just getting interested." (Not sure which it is... it's a little unclear.

The other appears to say, "You heard me right the first time!"

I suggest we stick to the book and the don bluth canceld film.

That's fine by me idea. Perhaps you can help us with those two areas a little? Specifically:

- I don't know what book you are referring to.
- There isn't a lot of information publicly available concerning the cancelled film.

That's a start though. :)

I'm reffering to steven baur's book Satyrday, and the don bluth cancelled film is satyrday

Rodney
04-19-2011, 06:48 PM
Well, I don't yet have Steven Baur's book and Don isn't hanging out at my house sharing all of his secrets. That leaves me doin' that Google thang.

Here's what I learned today:

Satyrday is:
A semi-mythic story
A boy (Derin) raised by a satyr (Mathew)
A journey to free the moon
An encounter with an imperious giant owl
A discovery of the boy's origins.
A chance meeting with a fox (who is also a nymph),
A revelation by a raven (who is a traitor to the Owl's cause of bringing on the darkness),

All of the animals are anthropomorphized:
• One owl
• Three hawks
• Two weasels
• Three hundred fish
• One fox (Vera)
• A hundred thousand ravens (One of which may sacrifice himself to help save the day?)
etc.

The Main Plot
An evil owl has his minions (the ravens) capture the moon and a satyr and a boy he has raised since an infant must journey to save it.

Environment and Story Elements
The world can be walked across in a week
Weekdays are Norse-etymologized, names are Christian-based and language is largely Latin influenced.
The various birds provide a backdrop of creative scenery and enjoyable points of view
The dialogue between the protagonists tends to be brief and cryptic,
The dynamic between the faun and the sometimes-nymph should prove exploitable.
The ending has a sense of irony.

Many thanks go out to Felice for pointing us to the original drawings.
There is one drawing of the Snowfox that I've never seen before from a front view. That'll help a lot.

I'm glad to hear you've completed the book.
I'll have to order one.

It is possible to find some of the text from the novel online but thus far I haven't seen a whole lot. Steven Bauer does have a way with words:

It was just past midnight and the air was filled with wings. An army of ravens came out of the west like a cold black storm. Leaves rustled in the deepening chill, and over the grounds a wind rolled, a darkly visible tumbleweed of air.

But in the sky was a rumble such as a distant earthquake might have made. The moon was startled by the sound. The night had been peaceful, its curved sweep studded with stars. Above her, their sharp sparks bristled. She had followed this course forever, her bright edge unfolding until a pale medallion hung full in the sky. Balanced between the earth and the pincushion of stars above, she remained pleased with herself, the axis of night, the interlocutor. But now she was waning, past half, growing weaker with the loss of light. And this rumble behind her was frightening.

Over her shoulder the moon watched the ravens approach.

I could easily see the following dialogue exchange in a Don Bluth film:

Young one," she said. "Are you sick?"

"I don't think so," he said. "Do I look sick?"

"You certainly do," the crone said. "What's the matter?"

"All I feel is sad," Condor said. "It's like I have something growing inside me that wants to get out but can't."

"Indigestion," the crone said. "You're not chewing your food properly."

Condor shot her a disappointed glance. "I don't think this is something for you to joke about."

...and this might be a spoiler here but apparently...Maxwell dies?

"You had his wings broken."

"I admit it," the owl said. "The other animals might have learned from his example. My power is absolute, but illusory, much like your light. I assume those I rule won't understand my power is something which can be taken away from me."

"I hadn't known your penchant for the philosophical," the moon said. "But all the philosophy you could command can't change the fact of Maxwell's death."

"He was only one raven," the owl said.

"Yes," the moon said. "He was that."

Thanks!
You know... perhaps they would be even more expressive if they were mice! hehe :)

When drawing these I was vaguely aware the animals were but wasn't in able to refer to the reference. I was just trying to draw these out as quickly as I could.

The page on the bottom right (above the blank space) will be an interesting challenge. That is where (I assume) they will be climbing up the side of a mountain.

I didn't even know there was suppose to be a pegasus in the story until I'd read Lina's script. Finding ways to bring her into the panels while progressing the story was a lot of fun while drawing the current panels.

I think the fun part of drawing this comic will be trying to get into Don Bluth's style for it. I'm not sure I'm up to that but will certainly aim for it.

The drawings do provide a starting place.

As I get the opportunity I'll try to get more familiar with the Bluth designed characters. I'll attempt a few model sheets to understand them better because with the limited amount of artwork available there is still a lot of guesswork to these characters. It's not all downside though, the gaps not only makes this process fun... it keeps it challenging.

Ah, the world of online production.
One of the reasons I was interested in getting involved with this project was to explore and become more familiar with the Don Bluth's style.

I was under the impression the reason you launched this project in the Don Bluth forum was because of your interest in Don Bluth's take on 'Satyrday' and the story's connection and filtering through the Don Bluth style.

It seems a bit odd (but not particularly impossible) to still pursue the project with only a tentative connection to Don Bluth on Don Bluth's site. It seems to me that the primary reason not to use Don Bluth's style would be to keep the lawyers from knocking (i.e. I'm not sure who currently owns the 'Satyrday' rights. Now you've got me wondering if Bruce McNally has a forum open to such projects...

Is there a particular reason why you hope to target Bruce McNally's style?
(I ask primarily because he has many styles)

So, more of a Saturday Morning cartoon look.

You're shooting for a cel shaded look to the comic book (as if the frames of the animation were simply captured and placed in the comic book) or just that general style?

Lina-chan
06-04-2011, 05:36 PM
Yeah, Kind Of. Half cel shadedm Half general style will do the trick.

Rodney
06-04-2011, 05:57 PM
Half cel shadedm Half general style will do the trick.

That's a little too vague for me to interpret.

An animated drawing is usually cel 'painted' or not.
'Cel Shaded' is more of a computer graphics term. I shouldn't have used that! (Somewhat related and worth noting: The style of the 'Snow Queen' has no shading... much easier to implement and more friendly to the budget(!) but it does have some basic shadows)
Are you looking for the comic book to look like it is cel painted (glossy print) versus standard comic book coloring?

Likewise, half of a general style is something of a moving target.
If the panels of the comic book look like they are cel painted I don't know how to break that down into halves.

With that area further defined here then is a third (over-arching) question:
Is the comic book to look like it has captured frames from 'the movie' in it's panels?

A fourth question that I think answers itself:
I assume the backgrounds are in the traditional style of animated film's painted backgrounds?

The closest I've seen to the look of the film you just linked to are the Japanese Anime Comics (the ones from European adaptions not the native Japanese anime style... think "Dog of Flanders"). Perhaps you can find an online comic book that demonstrates the look you are after?

Rodney

While waiting for clarification... some random thoughts on styling:

The general difference I see between (what I perceive as) Bruce McNally' style and Don Bluth's style are:

- McNally's style is rounder/looser/not as defined
- Bluth's style uses a lot more straights and curves
- McNally's style is sparse on the high budget application of the Principles of Animation (Sense of Weight and Force in particular)
- While there are many simularities, Bluth's style is closer to Disney's style than McNally's.
- Bluth's style is more feature film animation versus McNally's (often) very limited animation style

I note that there is a considerable shift in McNally's style (at least in the Snow Queen movie) from that of the humans to that of the animals. The humans are closer to a Filmation/Hanna Barbera whereas the Animals approach Bluth (but not quite Disney... perhaps it's the eyes?). Of the two I prefer the animal's style as it is softer and more fluid while the humans more robotic. I believe the difference is most notable when comparing the limited animation on the Snow Queen character versus that of the Bird.

Rodney
06-04-2011, 07:08 PM
Here's a random wolf from 'Snow Queen' to demonstrate the general style:
(I should note again that the character designs change a bit throughout the film... The number of characters appearing and the divergent plot lines makes me think this is an animated TV series re-purposed into a feature film (?))

http://blog.5pointpatch.com/wp-content/uploads/blog.5pointpatch.com/2011/06/RandomWolf.jpg

It's not a stretch to think this would work well in the 'Satyrday' comic.
Of possible note: This character isn't too far removed from a general Bluth style.

Rodney
06-04-2011, 07:23 PM
I found an element of particular interest in 'Snow Queen' to be some of the elements that upped the production values despite it's somewhat limited animation. In particular, I see a lot of effort has been made to have the characters interact with the backgrounds. While I haven't initiated a tally or set out to fully analyze this, it seems every sequence was targeted for some interaction.

Here's the main bird to illustrate the character's style and detailing from the film (Also note the minor/subtle registration at the bottom where he interacts with the background... with overlapping scarf even... something that might not have been planned and executed in more limited animation):

I will assume you are still talking about a comic book here?

Which do you prefer to tackle first? Prologue or Epilogue?

Do you have an idea of what such a Prologue and Epilogue would consist of?

What characters would appear in them?

Not having access to the Saturday novel puts most of us at a disadvantage so we are relying on you to fill in the gaps here.

Yes, We should Tackle down the Prolouge, Prolouge will consist of before the events of Satyrday, like the animals caught in a tornado made by the owl, the people fleeing from the owl and his minions into the keep, Derin's parents being killed and his uncle taking him as a baby to a safe place, but getting exuased and sick that he dies, Firethroat the Phoenix saves Derin's life and bring him to Matthew the Satyr, telling him to keep Derin safe, and Matthew bringing baby Derin to the Meadowlands.

It sounds like you've got a very good grasp on the outline of the prologue.
Okay... thinking and retyping your outline:

The Animals get caught in a tornado made by the Owl)
The people flee into the keep
The Owl and the Owl's minions follow
Derin's parents are killed
Derin's Uncle takes Derin (as a baby) to a safe place
Derin's Uncle gets so exhausted and sick in the rescue that he dies
Firethroat the Phoenix saves Derin's life and delivers him to Matthew the Satyr
Firethroat charges Matthew with keeping Derin safe
Matthew raises Derin and brings him to the Meadowlands.

I like it. Here we go with a few questions:

Characters
The Animals (Which ones?)
The People (Derin's vclan?)
The Owl (Main Villain)
The Owl's Minions (Lots of them or just a few?)
Derin's Parent's (Linkages to Derin... similar traits)
Derin's Uncle (Linkages to Derin)
Firethroat the Phoenix (Should be an interesting design)
Matthew the Satyr

Places/Environments
Initial Establishing Shot (some place where the animals encounter a tornado - perhaps a vast grassy plain but must be an compelling design)

The Keep (Fortified Safe Haven and likely scene of a battle?)

Events
A tornado chasing animals
People fleeing
Pursuit of the Owl and his minions after something at first undefined
The Killing of Derin's Parents (off panel? In shadows? Narrated?)
Derin's Uncle running and hiding with a child and arriving at a safe place.
The death of Derin's Uncle after the child's safe arrival
Firethroat the Phoenix discovers the child
Firethroat introduces Matthew the Satyr to the child
Firethroat convinces Matthew to take on the care of the child
Matthew grows more attached to the young boy as he grows
And for awhile at least they are very content and happy in the Meadows
Until... (climactic point or transition of the Prologue to the main storyline)

the Animals( Deidre's family, Vera's family, Pablo's family and many more)
The People(Yes, Derin's clan)
The Owl's minions(Lots of ravens and falcons)
Derin's Parents(Well there's a brown haired man, and a ginger haire woman)
Derin's Uncle( Man with short blonde hair who is Derin's Mother's brother)
Firethroat the Phoenix(Check this Out! http://mantacharlotte.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=24#/d3gcham )
Plain with animal would do just fine.
Village in deadwood forest being destroyed by Owl's Minions

I especially like the one of the Owl flying in and opening his talons... that'd be very cool to capture in the Prologue.

Good! I'll Be Waiting!

Hey, don't wait! Times a wasting!
Stars dim. Light dissipates to darkness. Galaxies fade away. All while you are waiting.

Words are very effective in creating comic books and feature films.
They simply use different languages as they become necessary.
Where no images yet exist, use words to light their way.

Are the model Sheets finished yet? and it's time to ramp up again!

Rodney
01-03-2012, 11:00 AM
Remind me who was doing model sheets again?

I've started up again on my end and did some preliminary work on the owl. He's going to be fun!

If you can't track down artwork for modelsheets perhaps you can collect photos of horses, crows, and the various animals in the script as well as photos that evoke the moods and backgrounds so that you are still moving forward and making progress. Even something as simple as a series of color photos that suggest how the color will flow from scene to scene will get things rolling.

Happy New Year!

Lina-chan
01-03-2012, 01:24 PM
Oh, right, Uh, me and some other people on deviant art are doing the model sheets. And I got some artwork too

Rodney

I've only been drawing a little BUT... I've been sorting a lot of things behind the scenes. It is my hope that you will be impressed when I get things organized.

Since you've gone back and forth a couple of times on whether this is a comic book or film I will assume it's both and press on with it. There are a lot of thing in common with both comic book and film so while we are firming up one we are completing the other... and vice versa.

The one thing that is very clear to me right now is that we all need to stare at the script and make sure we are working from it. If there are issues with the story it's in the script that we need to refine those issues.

Cheers!
