I create my best characters at night but I still draw mostly during the day, I can think more clearly and not be distracted by anything. Im a night person that loves the morning! :)
When do you usually draw and are you a morning person or a night person.:D
Half the time unless I have to go to class I'm not even awake for morning. I'm definetely someone who draws at night :D

Mornings are gross! On the weekends I'm lucky if I get up by 2pm.

I've been getting up lately with my partner when he rises for work, which is to say earlier than I've been used to before! But it helps with my gardening to be up with the sun, and I'm finding that the quiet morning hours are a perfect time for me to relax and imagine and practice. My morning tea or coffee helps, too. XD
But I also have another peak period, and that's at night, generally after 11pm or so. (For years I worked at a job that would end around this time, so I think the habit of being On after that point hasn't left me yet. Ah, student days.) I suppose I'm lucky or something, but it's inconvenient to be falling asleep and have the Muse at my ear. Makes for interesting dreams though. :)

Late at night (around 8 p.m. up to 4 a.m.) when no one will bother me and all my other tasks and obligations are done.

my best time is whenever my girlfriend is at work or away
when shes around she demands my attention therefore i can't concentrate
so basically whenever i can, sometimes i give her money to go shopping so she leaves the house so i can animate/draw/sketch lol

When ever I can ! With 4 kids still at home and a demanding wife and two demanding jobs it's difficult to catch a moment. I take my sketch pad with me where ever I go and even to bed at night. :D

I sleep with a blanket who sleeps with a sketchbook. I don't know why it does that when it never even draws. :/

Most of my drawing occurs as I sit digesting lunch at one fast food place or another.
I have dozens of paper place mats and tray liners that I've doodled on when I forgot my sketch book or clip board. ( Even came up with what I thought was a catchy name for the collection "TRAY LINEaRt" :D )
--
I used to also like to go to the food court of the local mall and draw the people - until
I had a rather unpleasant experience a year or so ago.
I had had my fill of food and sketching and I started to leave the food court to go into the mall proper when I was stopped by two sheriff deputies.
"We had a report someone was drawing the children" one of them stated.
The food court wraps around a playground for the kids. I acknowledged I had and showed them my sketches.
"Have I done anything wrong?" I asked.
"No" they replied.
I haven't been too keen about drawing people in public since.

I think it should be illegal for people to sketch you on the subway...I really hate that.

Yeah I run into this problem a lot too with my girlfriend. She's very supportive but its hard when someone has to deal with an obsessive work-a-holic. We've struck a middle ground where I can work late in the bedroom rather than in the office separate from her. Its a good reminder that no matter how much someone loves their job, family and friends are just as important and to remember to live life as well. So yeah, I guess I draw all the time :P

I walk most of the time. The subways are disgusting.
But if I'm on the subway and someone is drawing me, I just give them the evil eye...it's probly just some hipster from SVA, so they deserve it.

make funny faces or do peak a boo
or better yet! draw them and make them look terrible and give it to them lol
I'm guilty of drawing people on the train. It's one of the spare moments in my day where I can. Don't hate me D:
Also yep definetely a nightowl. 5am here and I'm up sketching. I just can't concentrate during the day.

I am just getting back into art again after a long time of not doing much. During the work week I start drawing after my wife and daughter go to sleep and I draw till I can't keep my eyes open anymore. On the weekends I get up early before everyone else and do art and stay up late after they go to bed to work some more. I am very tired a lot of the time but I love all things art so it's worth it to me!:)

Usually when I can escape the "you suck" sentiments I get once in a while when I throw down my pencil in frustration and enjoy drawing.

HAHA I funny cause it is true. I remember playing it all day on the gameboy. that night...all night.. heard the tetris sounds and saw shapes spin in my head.
I mostly draw at night because of free time. But I do get a sketch in here or there at work when no one is looking(while waiting for the computer to load a heavy psd file).
Regardless of time, I will say I have discovered my drawings are way better when well rested. sounds funny but my focus and control increases. I have had soooo many years where I have 6 or less hours that I never noticed it. As of last year I have tried to get a full good nights sleep each day(failed today ;). The days I do look much better. Sleeeeeep good stuff:laughing:

That is part of the reason for the good night sleep I mentioned above. My wife wont allow me to be in the office anymore after a certain hour. She has made me get more sleep. However like I mentioned my work has got better from it. Less time drawing maybe but better quality from it.

Can we get back on topic here?
I also usually draw more when my sister is around.
She is good at realistic drawing, texture and stuff. Though I don't know if she would make a good animator or not.

I draw any time anywhere. Whenever I get inspiration to do so, I do that at restaurants on napkins even. The random times are when I draw best and they strike at any moment out of nowhere.
I used to draw really often, I do it nowadays as well, especially at school. Four hours or so per day. And home another couple of hours on the computer. But this happens rarely since school started to fill my schedule.
And if it's about drawing in general, I do it everyday and anywhere... depends on my inspiration and of course my mood.

Awesome! I will sometimes, whether it looks bad or not, just haul a notebook around and a pencil so I can draw wherever I want. I did even when I went to church, it kept me awake.... Though they didn't mind at least.

I cant keep up with you guys and girls !
I am having doubts I will be able to work in the animation industry maybe its lack of knowledge in animation.
Really getting worried that almost all of you draw on a daily basis and I am not able to do that! :(
Ive spent 9hours a lot of time after school working on the walk cycle's and Ive pretty much ripped them all up because Ive gotten all frustrated. they weren't that bad I guess but to me their a disappointment and I cant approve of my own stuff why would someone else.... So im taking a bit of a brake from it!
sorry for my depressing message :D
I really need someones advice about this if they have any?
Next time I post I promis all of you that I will be lot more better!
If find that if you are sitting there getting frustrated with what you are doing. Stop! Nothing productive really ever come of it and you just wear yourself out. Go outside and take a break :D Go for a for a jog, have a shower, play with your pets, etc. When you come back you'll feel more refreshed.
As an artist you are your own worst critic and sometimes it's hard to see how you can possibly fit in but just remember all those great artists had to start somewhere as well and they did not get where they were overnight. Just keep drawing when you get the chance and remember to draw what you feel :D

This is starting to diverge from the topic but I think your problem stems from thinking like an individual vs being open to the group. It's a totally understandable thing and we all do it. Nine hours is long time to be working on something where you feel no reward from the end result but instead of ripping up the drawings, please post them to the site. That way we can help you spot issues as they arise. Maybe you're having difficulty with your process or struggling with the drawing or maybe the animation doesn't have the attitude or character you want. It's difficult to know unless we see the results. If you feel embarrassed about showing what you feel is bad work, don't worry, I've made a thread (http://www.donbluthanimation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=253) where people can post their early work. I've put some really bad drawings and animation there to help get the ball rolling. Don't worry, the nine old men weren't created over night, it took them years to get good at their craft and even then some struggled with certain issues (http://sewardstreet.com/clips/Glen_on_Ollie_1.wav) while others excelled. Failure is a positive thing as long as you learn from your mistakes. Don't worry, you'll do just fine :)

Im not talking about keeping up with my drawing ability at all :) I can tell a lot of you are only posting what you feel is comfortable to you, I have never drawn animals before but Im trying! if you see some of the people I draw maybe you may have an Idea of what my comfort zone may be like :P
I dont want to sound mean but honestly their is a whole bunch of animal drawings here that all look alike, Im saying just whats on my mind but they do and I find it funny becuase how can most of you draw the same looking animals :)

I often draw at night, just when I'm about to go to bed. During the day, no matter what, I seem to get distracted. I try to keep the tv off, but the internet is always there.
Eventually when it gets too late for me, and I start to get ready for bed, often when I see a paper and pencil near by, I start to draw a bit before turning out the light. Probably not the best time when I'm tired. Lately I find it helpful to always keep some paper or sketchbook ready to go at a moments notice.
Or for drawing with a tablet. Download ArtRage 2.5 starter edition for free. It's great for spontaneous sketching since it opens instantly with new document, minimal interface that works well for a pen, great preset pencil that looks real by default, and you can rotate and zoom the canvas.
http://www.artrage.com/artragedown.html
Since I seem to do stuff right before bed, I should read up if that's a good idea or not. I recall once reading a story on the best time to study for a test, and that if you do it at the right time, you will retain more, wrong time, lose a lot of it.
