Well not so long ago I started a thread on drawing ability.
I was just looking around and animation schools and stuff and came across Vanarts (www.vanarts.com).
Anyway on there was a student that had designed a character and it was simple to draw and well structured.
So I decided to try and do an animation with him.

I would just like to know what people think :) (Animation wise and drawing wise)

Thanks for the help!

Doesn't look too bad from what I can tell without the inbetweens. I'd add those and maybe try to have the small anticipation before the step go in the opposite direction of the following move instead of straight down. I may be wrong, though; some properly spaced inbetweens should clear matters up. Just do 'em very roughly, some minimal outlines should do.

My initial thought is that your animation most definitely has the look of a character design by Wayne Gilbert. As Mr. Gilbert is (or at least was) an instructor at Van Arts I'd guess that's where the character gets his inspiration from. Regardless, I mention that mostly to establish that the character appears to be designed with animation in mind. That's definitely a good thing.

Your animation flows really well.
What is happening is clear. I can easily read and interpret the character's activity.

My one suggestion might be to consider the staging a little to reveal more of the character throughout the animation BUT...there is an aspect of having the character hidden by the stack of paper that is very appealing. For lack of a better term for it I tend to refer to this element as the 'peek-a-boo' principle; having objects/shapes appear and disappear appeals to a primal interest in human beings. The classical proof of this is that of playing 'peek-a-boo' with an infant... they will laugh and laugh and laugh at the adult hiding and revealing themselves repeatedly... far being most adult's patience to continue to play the game. Magic tricks work in similar ways but the act (or ommission) is carefully guided to misguide the subjects attention.

Regarding the performance you've got on display the move to screen right works really well. The area that seems to be lacking is at the end... it's as if there is more to the animation that we aren't seeing yet. In short, I'm still waiting to see the follow through at the end. As I cannot comment on what isn't there I can only guess your intentions. Will he make it over to that object on the ground? Will the huge stack of paper fall over or come crashing down? As I said though, as a side step it reads well.

Keep it up... with this initial animation you've captured my attention. :)

Hi Rodney Glad you like it!

I suppose it?s my fault I should have told you what?s going on :D

He?s carrying pots and pans but there?s one on the floor so stomps on it and flicks in on the top on the stack.
I was going to animate the pan on a separate level or when the in-betweens are done.

Sorry about the confusion

Wayne Gilbert was also my instructor back in the early 80's, at Sheridan College, Oakville, Ontario.

He’s carrying pots and pans.

Doh. No, I definitely didn't see that one coming.
That does explain what that step-thing over on the right was though. ;)

Nice. I'll bet you learned a lot from him.
I keep hoping he'll publish that second book he's had in the works for years now!
