View Full Version : Don's Early Work
I know I said I'd upload some of Don's early work to the gallery. Here's some really old stuff I found in a folder. The dates on these drawings go back to 1951 & 1952; that makes Don between 13 and 14 years old. The color of the paper is not far off from what you see in the images; it's faded yellow and very brittle.
If I still have a job after showing Don's early work in the forum, I'll keep uploading more and more.
Here Goes....

I have to say the first picture seems the best to me, some of the pictures with the basic shapes make the characters seem less character-esque. I have to say though if he was 12-14 he could draw better than me when I was that age.

Love these pictures, though the first one still seems the best even in this line up. the last one is also good but the camel seems a little strange to me.

Dude, what are you smoking? It's not a competition. He's better than me at 12-14 than I am now. Just enjoy the art. Everyone's a critic!

Dave,
A look at Don Bluth's early artwork is worth the price of admission into Don's Club membership alone.
Thanks for posting these and good luck with that new job! ;)
Don,
Keep on drawing those pretty pictures.
Edit: Looking back at these drawings they all strike me as very expressive. No boring poses there.
The draftmanship may haven't been fully refined but even at a young age all of the essential elements are there.
I think I like Don's fairy from Pinnochio more than the one that made it into the film.
Wow these are amazing. At such a young age as well. I think my favourite has to be the madhatter.

Yes, very nice Don!
I enjoy seeing an artists early work. It allows me to see and understand their progression. Sometimes it even helps me with my own skills!

Very nice work. Special thanks to Don for allowing us to 'pick his brain' and being so willing to help us succeed. It's a treat to learn first-hand from such a master of the art.

First on right on TK my feelings exactly. It is very inspiring to see Don Bluth's early work and to see how such a skilled artist developed and changed over time. Also like how a majority of them are from Peter Pan which is one of my favorite Disney movies.

Don was between 12 and 14 when he did these?? Woah!!
A voice inside my head seems to have the following to say, addressing me of course:
"Go home, son. You have no hope whatsoever."
