You have some really cute drawings. I especially like this one (http://likeshine.artspots.com/image/19884/furfright-shirt-concept-1) on your site. Its very solid, expressive and nicely drawn.
I like how your animation is rough but I think maybe you're struggling with the animation process. Flash isn't the easiest program to draw in either so I admire the effort and I think you're doing the right thing by roughing out your work first before doing anything with symbols.
If I could give a few suggestions, maybe try animating on paper first. Separate your process so you can take some time before you draw and visual your character. Find out everything about him/her and why that character is yawning. Is he bored, tired, annoyed? Also, is your character acting to someone? Once you visual this clearly, then start thumbnailing the action and I find if I write down the subtext to the scene or the characters thoughts below the thumbnail, it helps a lot. Then take your thumbnails and enlarge them so they fit the field you're animating then start loose, like you're doing, but keep it to your main poses. Once you've done that, then shoot your stuff if you like and once you're confident the action work, tie down your work. If it doesn't work, try again until the acting/action feels right. It might be a good spot to get feedback too. So the first half is more about developing character acting, rhythms and the tie down is more about the drawing so everything feels solid, on model and you can flesh out little details in overlapping action or perhaps some secondary action that wouldn't always be clear in very loose animation.
Good luck! I can't wait for what you'll come up with next!

sorry to say, but that picture you linked isn't mine at all. the part of the site I hoped my profile linked to was my gallery in it.
thank you very much on your thoughts, and I'll try to consider these next time. I did enjoy making it rough as it was since I've not been a fan of tweening, or watching the result of it on TV, at least. As for the character and focus, it wasn't very thought out due to her being my personal character to be silly with and vent with; so, at the time I did this, it was late at night and I started to get tired, which is why she's yawning (of course, I think I need to make it so she holds it out for a longer period of time)

Oops.. my mistake - sorry about that. Yeah and you're right about animation too. If you're doing it for fun, that's nice! Your animation success is enjoying your work and that's just as important as the finished piece.
Your drawings are very nice and appealing too. I really enjoyed the Brisby sketch.

I have to say......OMG! your work is amazing....line weight, contrast areas, the weight and balance of the character. expression....it's all there and you say you are envious hahahahahahah I laugh at you young lady ...you have no reason to be !!! Great work :D
jeremyhopkins
05-17-2009, 11:44 AM
Yes, you really are exceptionally talented! The last inking page is beautiful! You have great character, great structure, well drawn, fun characters. It's always tough to critique your work because it's so good. The only suggestion I could offer is watch out for the standard, 'I don't know' or W pose with the character shrugging. It's a very popular pose to use and has become a cliche. Your version is already better because you varied the arms and just because it's a cliche isn't always a bad thing as long as you are aware of the over use. Beautiful, top notch work!
IzzyS
05-17-2009, 12:13 PM
*Cartuneman* oh wow, thanks :)! I can be envious for reasons, and you can't do anything about that, haha!
*jeremyhopkins* thanks, I've been having a blast drawing with inks lately. Oh, I didn't know it was so hard to critique, I'm sorry, I do appreciate every bit you have to say though. I guess that's one of the mistakes I made about that picture, I didn't know it was a cliche, whoops :)!

I see that a lot of your drawings have a certain defined style to them. This could be good for a career in character design(many famous american and japanese character designers usually find a memorable style to give their art by)
Very nice! You have an assured and fluid handwriting. "You got skills" (as the kids say).

haha, I somehow got the catbus vibe AFTER I drew it, which was neat and pretty unexpected. Totoro was one of my first japanese movies I've seen after moving to the states when I was 3 or 4. I have to admit I'm a bit of a Studio Ghibli (the studio Hayao Miyazaki runs, there's other people there, you know :D) fan and adore Miyazaki's movies, really. I can't wait to add the Ponyo DVD to my collection
