I can easily see this character living in the same world as Beatrice's characters.
Keep it up!

Very Nice, You using Painter to color?
first one i used Painter and but last one by artrage after hearing from Beatrice that she is using artrage.......so am trying to learn the software now...but...guys,,,,it is so fun to make the silhouette first with very quick approaches with heavy brush then add only few lines to make it clear... have done all recent drawings in this way...and getting some unique result...
and you must see Glen Vilppu dvds ...you can see more things very clearly after seeing his method...:D
zanekohler
03-04-2011, 10:08 AM
Cool thanks for the info. Never used ArtRage. You prefer it over Painter? I know you just started using it so you may not have it fully tested yet.
I do have one of vilppus dvd's. The one I have I believe is quick sketch. I have not watched in some time. I do want to eventually get more. They are very cool for sure. Which ones do you have? I was thinking of getting the anatomy ones at some point.
`Drawings Manuals` is the series that helps me a lot.....as there he demonstrates how to build up form upon a form with using very simple shape.......and it is excellent to see when he draws only simple form like sphere, boxes and when he touches only few line upon them suddenly a realistic figure appears...amazing method....`anatomy ` series is also helpful...but, i feel boring when he doesn't miss any single bone...so, i dont need to learn every finger`s little bone of hands and legs...ahhahaha......but they are also helpful as you can come up with a simple idea with your own....
i am used to draw with photoshop but very recent i am using painter and artrage both as they have lots of unique brush tools..

Awesome thanks, I may have to check out the Drawing Manuals. they say a picture is worth a 1000 words , it certainly does in seeing your work improve.
Yeah I know what you mean about anatomy being a bit boring when going in detail. I had taken an intense anatomy class where they went over every little part. Very helpful and glad I took it, but was hard to keep motivated the whole time.
I use photoshop as my main computer paint. I have painter but always forget to use it. Might also have to try artrage. I do like some of the bush looks it has.

Also going to mention, speaking of dvd's ... You should check out David Colemans (http://davidcolman.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2010-11-23T23%3A16%3A00-08%3A00) dvd The Art of Character Design. You sit over his shoulder and watch him sketch out some amazing designs. Got this one a year or so ago and have not been disappointed.

I'm so glad to see you animating again. Its good you started with just a ball, I could see that turning into a mouse, rabbit or fox very easily once you're happy with the timing. I remember your animation from the Cyber garage project very well!
Thank you Owen...yes, that was an amazing experienced for me...as i did whole my scene straight ahead....ahahhahaa....

Drawing realistically is a huge challenge for me. I wonder how long it took you to get good at it. I took a figure drawing class in college once, and I was happy just to get proportions right. I run into similar challenges drawing human cartoons. Getting Thumbelina's head (in my gallery) decent was half the battle!
OwenWelsh
07-07-2011, 07:19 PM
Wow Arif,
I'm amazed. You know so much about muscle anatomy! I am very impressed I am sure that this knowledge will show up in your work, and I think it already has. They are very nice studies.
Thank you Martha and Owen...
To Martha- i started drawing since 2 years as i gave up drawing once....so, you can say that it took 2 years to reach this level.....and when , i was in fine arts..i drew so many human figure without knowing nothing..only copying from real life....so, i made so many good drawings..but, when i came in this field....i realized that i don't know anything about caricature or draw from my mind....so, i started analyzing....and all my drawings were from my imagination. When i able to draw from mind, it gives me courage to go further more..
i started learning human anatomy as well as animal also as i realized that i must learn the basic things without sacrifice anything if i want to make my skills more better....so, this study gives me so many ways to explore my drawings and more importantly i can see image on a white paper....
Just try and you could do it.

Arif,
I just want to say that in looking back at your gallery pages the improvement you've been making clear. To my way of thinking you've also gained a lot of confidence in your line and there is a boldness that wasn't there before. You also haven't lot your sense of fun (as evidenced by your mouse character).
Keep at it my friend.
I'm going to take a guess at the story pose/emotion that the mouse is presenting. I'm not sure if I'll get it but here goes...
1. Self Confidently (He's right about something and he knows it)
2. Sleepy (Yawning while noting that the sock is no longer on his foot... he'll find it in the morning) Okay, I made this one up... I think the face is trying to say "Ouch!" You just dropped that thing on my toe!" but his face reads more sleepy than in pain. You'll have to clue me in on this one.
3. Interested in nearby events/people (He's just seen someone or something that is very interesting to him... perhaps over there... across the street.)
4. Something smells delicious! (He's savoring the moment and happy to just get a whiff. It smells so good he can almost taste it. In his mind he IS tasting it.)
5. Disbelieving. (What he is seeing right there in front of him can't be real so he laughs for a moment... how silly it is to think that thing.. right there in front of him... could be real.) I suppose he could also be laughing at someone or something.
Apologies for every one I get wrong but it was fun to guess at them.
Rock on Arif!
Thank you Rodney for your nice comments...yes, i really enjoyed each mouse drawings and when i finished one drawing with feeling i remember every time what Don always say.......getting the feeling...getting the feeling.....
I kept doing practice and change the topics immediately so that i can be so easy in every stage..like cartoon..suddenly my female with some subtle feelings...then boring anatomy....
Recently, i have been diving into comic book illustrations and found that why i was not trying this before....as from learning nuts and bolt ..I know what i missed over the years....but, i am young in my mind (not age..hahha)..so i am learning....learn..learn learn....
here is little different practice like comic...i drew the drawing first then filled with ink..

That last image isn't showing up for me Arif.
Edit: Scratch that... I see it now.
Very nice! (Although I must admit that I don't know what the character is doing. Setting lose a small boat... is that fishing string over on the right... the rocky cliffs... have shapes that make me think this character is a giant... not sure here. Very nicely colored and if this was accompanied by text that described the story I'd be pulled all the way in)
Your previous one is showing though... and I like it!
here is little different practice like comic...i drew the drawing first then filled with ink..
Inking is something I'd like to work on myself... too distracted these days.
What you've got going here has me thinking back to the early pulp illustrations (the one's that had spot illustrations accompanying the story told in text). The style has a Roy Krenkel (roy krenkel gallery) flair to it but with a bit of modern edge. The style itself is different but the energy is certainly there.

Arif this looks so cool. Your anatomy is getting so dynamic I like the floating eyes very Sci Fi. :)
Learning from comic...and going back some portrait study....it is not like comic character....but, follow some rules how comic artist draw human face. It is not close either but found so many things while attempting this based on rules and got amazed when saw some realistic look came out but drew it completely from logic and imagination.

Hi Arif
I enjoyed the recent head sketches, the female and the boy.
I suggest making sure you have some hard edge values, since everything seems a bit to blurry/out focus. And distributing the values a bit more, the contrast is a bit a high, particularly on the female one.
Besides that the proportions and overall look is on the right path.

I really like the design of this drawing Arif, this one has an emotion as well. My only suggestion on this one is the nose. It feels a little flat. Try pulling it up and out more and letting it cover a bit of the left eye. I think that will help add more dimension to your drawing.

I always pictured you as... um... taller. ;)
You have been doing some amazing things with your shaded effects.
During this past seminar I couldn't help but think about how what you are doing fits in with Don's suggestions for movement of colors and shapes.
I can almost see your characters (in fully drawn shading) moving around the animated page.

sigh..i am not 6FT like you..very average person like Bangladeshi height...:o:laughing:
in recent days, when i was digging up the `Real` professional work...i found that there are 3 area where some amazing artists there. Animation,In comic section, and creating character for Games or films.it is different from Creating character for Animation as it requires huuuuge detail art work with any creature. and i was almost faint to see `David finch drawing when he draws for comic book for Merval or DC...His approach got me back in so much detail art work as it is demanding on that media. So, while attempting some drawing kept on that `Media`...i was looking for myself that how much detail work i can make.
so , I am trying to learn from Comic books and film or games character design.and the most important thing is that they are not distracting me my main goal` what Don wants me see in that way...`ANIMATOR`.
i am on that way Rodney...the main problem is that i am not very smart in brain i think...that is why i took so much time to learn even a very simple thing...ahah..:(
Animation is my main GOAL...Thanks for supporting me along with my journey all the time friend.
Rodney

Thanks for supporting me along with journey ll the time.
You make support easy Arif! :)
As much as I love your detailed artwork I do think that fast and furious... with less detail... lends itself better to animation. Of course, you can also use those skills to design what will be animated too and your use of shading is a particularly interesting approach that I think would lend itself well to animation. For instance, if you were to remove the line drawings and just animate the shaded forms moving around then you could go back in and draw the detail of the form/character. This fits in closely to what Don was talking about with negative shapes that it seems a very reasonable approach.
I'm watching 'Secret of NIMH' right now and the negative shapes are so often perfectly formed... amazing stuff! But note... all this technical stuff is for the creative process... I watched it the first time today with no other goal than to enjoy it. :)
Added: I know Don and other suggest Lighting and Shading as something that comes at the end of the process so I'm not trying to suggest a new workflow. For the kind of drawings that you've been posting though I can't help but think it might work.
hm..here is another..very own cliche. sigh..

Wow. I like that.
Don's lesson has sunk in.
A few observations/questions:
Is the cane magical? I ask because it does not look like it would be very supportive of his weight. Notice how in the loop of the limb there is an area where the branch would bend downward as he puts his weight onto the cane. If of some magical property (or very dense/petrified wood) obviously this need not be the case.
I'm not sure if it is intentional but the turtle is looking at the reference he was made from (they almost look like they are looking at each other). If this is intentional... pat yourself on the back. If not, then my thought is that the turtle should be attending to something... going somewhere... thinking about something. Other than the reference photo I'm not sure what that would be.
Wonderful drawing Arif! (If you are ever interested I'd love to join forces with you and animate him)
Yes..Rodney...i did not want to make a stick..it is some kind of Magic wand..but, i lost patience at the end..so, i kept it as it is..:o
hahaha..no.the eye contact between reference picture and my drawing is accidental...ahhah...but, i wanna pat myself on my back....ahahahhaa
And i think, Don revealed his secret last few seminars...i got a clear cut way to make character now....and wondering why Don did not show before..
But, Don...Sir...Thank you once again to show us the path.... my Hat`s off to you SIR..:D

Wow Arif, that's a great character! I love the attention to little details, like the ragged hairs on his clothes and the texture of his skin. And his cane is so cool! I agree with Rodney on how it looks like the cane wouldn't really support his weight, but the twists are very interesting and you said it's magical, so it all works =] Keep it up! You design wonderful characters.

I am not sure if it is ok to post my first client work(I mean, my individual client)...i did these symbols for using in the corner of the page of a Children magazine here in Bangladesh. i just sent them some sample what i created but they loved it soooo much and wanted to use these in this current issue...The Magazine will publish on First January...
I enjoyed a lot to make them as it takes so little time and i did not feel afraid as they will be using as a symbol. So i avoided to do detail...
I am so happy as what i am doing all the time..i do it for my inner peace and i love to create and color characters...but, did not imagine that i will get money or some one going to pay for it . They looooved these...:D

He's a fascinating character Arif! He's definitely got a story to tell.
I can sympathize with the common struggle to get these images out of the brain and onto the paper. In fact, you've inspired me to write a blog post about! I call it, "Draw 27 drawings a day..."
Here's a breakdown from it:
http://newartofanimation.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/27drawingsaday_zoom.png?w=640
The scary thing is... the more we draw the more that number (27) seems to be conservative. ;)

Hi Arif,
Nice to view your drawings. You have a good sense of grounding and weight with your figures and in some a fine use of implied line. Other drawings have that heavy outline which can flatten things however your internal structural lines help flesh out your forms. Very cool.
I'm new in this forum but I hope my observation is helpful. Keep those figures full of volume!
