I'd like to post the entirety of the unfinished, would-be masterpiece that is The Thief and the Cobbler. I've been told it's pretty unknown, but I'm not quite sure if everyone on these forums has heard of it. Maybe, since everyone here is quite the 2D animation enthusiast, but regardless...

Here it is, in eleven parts.

Thanks guys, these are great! That Rescuers clip is golden and its great to show how differently everyone approached their shots.

Klyrical, yeah the making of Thief and the Cobbler is a sad story. I'm glad people have put together the original and we can see it on the internet now.

An animator faces his own animation in deadly combat. The battlefield? The Flash interface itself.
A stick figure is created by an animator with the intent to torture. The stick figure drawn by the animator will be using everything he can find - the brush tool, the eraser tool - to get back at his tormentor. It's resourcefulness versus power. Who will win? You can find out yourself.

I volunteer in the library and process Don Bluth's animation cels from Banjo, and get access to a lot of their production work from their other films. At least, the stuff that's already been processed, like most of NIMH, and portions of Thumbelina. Also, Don produced a magazine series in the 80's (around the time that NIMH got awarded I think?) called 'the Exposure Sheet', that had a function very similar to this new website. It was really exciting and informative to read through, I'm not sure if it's easy to get your hands on another issue now, but if anyone can, it's way cool.

Everyday I work at the library, it spurs my inspiration and motivation! I have some photos I took from an unnoficial 'exhibition' that the library had a few days ago. They said I could take pictures, so maybe I can get them up here to show you all :) I got some snapshots of 'Satyrday', 'Piper', and beautiful Pans from Rock-a-doodle and Thumbelina.

Ugh.. well I've never seen the film but James Baxter was the supervisor for Spirit and he has a reputation for being very nice and extremely talented. I've only spoken with him briefly but I feel that reputation is well deserved. Just thought it was interesting to watch him draw.

yea..James Baxter was the supervisor of the Spirit animation....and after watched the movie and his topics with spirit..i became his fan as well.....and i found that he is one of the greatest animator of these days...and..he did extremely well Beauty and the beast and others as well with Glen keane........
and who can forget his intro for KUNFU PANDA.....

and the opening shot is Spirit is the all time opening shots ever..as it is 3.30 mins long without any cut with 3d rotating of background and characters...it took 9 months...wow....

and it is great that he returned to Dream works again.....it is my thought that Dream works should return of making 2d animation .....i cant forget their stylist production like `PRINCE OF EYGYPT, Road to Al dorado...and SPIRIT.....

Jeremy,it is great that you talked with him and saw him drawing....what did he say about animation?? and what was he drawing?? just curious....

I met James briefly at Dreamworks when I was visiting my friend/mentor Jason Ryan. He works in the office right beside Jason - or he did in January. Later in the day I was able to meet him and Dean Deblois again at the Annies. What I take away from that experience was not only is James (and Dean) incredibly talented but also very generous and kind. While I'm glad James is still working in the industry, part of me is very sad to see the loss of his tradition animation production company - James Baxter Animation. Live action might have bigger stars but the very best people in the animation industry have the heart. I'd choose heart over glitz and glamor any day.

I was in Jason's first class at Animation Mentor and it's great that he's built such a nice site to share his knowledge and passion with students all over the world. When I was visiting him, the director of Shrek 4 stopped by to view his work and he pretty much said, wow - WOW! Jason is an excellent model for not only producing great work very quickly but for having a great attitude towards his work and life in general. Thanks Zane for sharing his the link to his site.

While this isn't animation, I really enjoyed this quirky film. It feels animated with its limited use of dialogue and it plays on the romance cliches. Films like this and Amelie are the kinds of films I enjoy and would like to be involved in creating:

Jeremy thats awesome, you must have had fun a dreamworks
I don't mean to get too off topic but this can be filed under inspiration. Glendale Dreamworks has a beautiful studio and actually it was somewhat overwhelming. I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to work all over Canada in beautiful studios or ugly warehouse/close to the ghetto type studios. At the end of the day, while its nice to work in a clean building or even a beautiful one, what matters is working with great people who have the opportunity to create something special. Sometimes its easy to get hung up on the studio name and forget that the studio is only as good as the people & the management style that allows these talented people to explore their full potential.

I'll include this link to an Ed Catmull interview where he discusses some interesting theories like talent vs ideas:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2h2lvhzMDc
Talent and freedom to create artistically driven stories are the most exciting thing about a studio and if it looks nice, well that's alright too but not essential.

Wow, great short David! I'm always impressed by Gobelins. Here's the 5 minute montage from Up that we were talking about a few months ago. It's my favorite part of the film and taking the sequence out of context doesn't help but with that in mind, I still think it's beautiful!

Jeremy- for some reason that part bugged me becuase I though he couldnt talk:laughing:, the young girl said "what you cant talk or something" and the boy used hand signals! drove me crazy untill I realized he could talk!

my favourite part of "UP" was when he first took off and you could see all the colors reflecting off the buildings! it was magnificent :D

overall the movie was okay, but did not like the ending!

jeremyhopkins
11-01-2009, 12:08 PM
I agree with you John, the ending sort of lost me as well at about the time they introduced the villain. Sorry I edited your response to remove spoilers just in case there are a few people who haven't see Up yet.

What I loved so much about the montage is the lack of dialogue and responsibility put on the viewer to watch and understand what's going on. Normally for children's entertainment, certain people want exposition for everything and quiet moments are lost. There will be aspects that children don't understand, like the stillborn baby, but they will know that something is wrong. Everything can be clearly read so its not pretentious filmmaking but the audience has to be listening to get something more. I greatly admire every department that worked on this sequence and feel that everything is in harmony - story, design, animation. What I appreciate most is for many people I've spoken with, including non animators, this sequence connects and is the most memorable part of the film. It has the most Miyazaki-ish feeling of any of the Pixar films I've seen to date.

I'd also like to add that for the most part Pixar has amazing sequences but at times they don't always fit together well. This sequence is excellent because it leans on what came before and after very nicely and places some nice foreshadowing for the ending sequences. It makes the early part of the movie feel very cohesive.

I recently saw Atlantis: The Lost Empire again for the first time since I was a kid and the animation actually is quite nice! There's a scene when Milo's ranting about something to the Atlantean woman where I especially noticed the gestures and the way his facial perspective changes as he gesticulates and moves his head around. Too bad this film is largely forgotten by the general public.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sISIWP14Ul0&feature=PlayList&p=3B6B0E0C8170FD81&index=9

This have inspired me since I was a young child. The first being a clip of Lady and the Tramp eating spaghetti. I think Frank Thomas really captured the emotion well in this sequence. I especially love the way Lady turns after accidently bumping muzzles when eating the same strand of spaghetti. I think this scene really captures the emotion of love.

The second is the scene from Secret of NIHM where Mrs. Brisby use the power of the necklace and her own self courage to save both her home and her children from sinking. I think this scene along with the part leading up to it is very dramatic and is also a good example of how to animate strong emotions. Another thing that I love about this scene is the special effects of the glowing necklace as a kid I can remember being wowed by this.

Those are great links Erica and Jeremy!

Access to animation and instruction like this makes me feel tremendously fortunate to be living in the age of the internet.

The inspiration and entertainment of movies like 'Lady and the Tramp' and 'Secret of NIHM' and an extended capability to study in detail the art of design and animation to a degree never before seen in history is proof to me that we aren't in the end times of hand drawn animation but rather in a learning cyclic between periods of prolific and inspired professional capacity.

In times past animation was mostly reserved for a few select individuals whose work was the equivalent of magic, but the time is coming (and in many ways now already is) where artists from all walks of life and all levels of society share an understanding of the art of animation with which all may tell their tales. This will scare some (there will be a lot of low quality animation as artists learn through their mistakes and others spectacularly fail) but regardless, for those with that burning desire, the art of animation will continually be embraced.

(Yikes... where'd that come from... back to drawing)

Sorry to disappoint you but I don't personally own any cel or artwork from Satyrday ... the picture that I posted a long while ago was from a collection of artworks donated by Don Bluth himself to the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. If it helps, the talented Arif started not long ago a thread about a Facebook page displaying a lot of artwork from unrealized projects of Don. I believe that you might be able to recognize a lot of sketches and concept designs for Satyrday as well. Here's Arif's original thread:
