Please keep all questions in reference to animation technique only.

I'll start the ball rolling with some questions from the guys that can't make it today....

Thanks

"Hello Mr. Bluth,

I've had a real problem all my life with always feeling that my artwork is inadequate. I honestly have never drawn something that I felt satisfied with. I was wondering if in your years of drawing and animating have you ever felt this way? If so, how do you stay on the positive side?
Thanks so much for your time."

Owen finished transcribing this seminar a while ago and it's my fault it hasn't gone sooner. Huge thanks to Owen for making these notes:

Video seminar transcription 12/30
Drawing:

Why are rough drawings better looking than clean up drawings?

Rough Drawings always have more feeling in them than a clean up drawing. When you are doing a rough drawing your idea is coming from the sub conscience and your feelings and your thoughts are going right into the drawing. When you do a clean up drawing it's a conscious mental effort. Those same feelings are not being imbued into the pencil. The rough drawing will always outshine the clean up drawing.

Why do we need clean-up drawings?

Clean-up drawings are necessary because in order to color it because you need to close off the shapes / gaps in the lines of your drawings.

Animating:

I can draw, but then I start animating and then I quickly become lost. What can I do?

1. Spend time visualizing inside your head.

2. Ask yourself: What is the focus of your the scene?

Is it best to animate in complete silence?

You should do whatever inspires you. I like to listen to classical musical similar to Mozart or Beethoven.

How do I animate two or more characters on screen?

If you have two or more characters on screen, you can't focus on both of them at the same time. Keep your focus character active and your dialogue can be expressed with body language. The sub dominate characters should be kept slightly alive, moving very little.

In live action, for example, actors try to steal scenes from each other. If you put two actors on a screen together they are mischievous and what they will do is try and put extra movement in their performances so that it will take eyes off the actor in focus who is doing the dialogue. It makes it very frustrating for the actor who is supposed to be in focus.

How long does it take to learn animation?

Animation takes a little while to learn. I remember when I started -- just merely moving my drawings around was a challenge. It took about two and half to three years before I felt comfortable performing as an animator. And then suddenly little light bulbs went on saying, "Oh that's what I'm supposed to be doing." It does come to you, but you have to be persistent about learning the principles. Animation is like music, in that, the more you study music, the more you know what music is trying to do, that same feeling will spill over into your animation. Avoid cliche, find ways to entertain and remember you have to entertain yourself first.

When you were animating Banjo the Woodpile Cat, did you study the voice actor's facial expressions?

No, I think we were mugging. We just had our characters pulling funning faces. It would have been better to give facial expressions to the character that reveal something about his/her feelings. And thats something that's more difficult to do.

General:

Are you going to re-issue the Art Storyboarding?

It's not up to Don to re-issue the book but it might happen. Don wants to make a new book which he will retain all the publishing rights.

Are you interested in writing an autobiography?

Gary has expressed interest in chronicling our journey but my interest is in education.

What do you think about animation software?

Animation software is a tool. If you are into pencil drawing, stick with Digicel, its a good program. You can take your rough animation through cleanup, color and final production shooting and the software is priced affordable.

Cyber Garage Project:

What frame rate are we working on for the Cyber Garage Project?

24 frames per second. Not 30 frames per second, 29.97 or anything else.

Can we change the length of our scenes?

No. Do not add or remove frames from the marked footage. If you do, or plan to, please let us know. Because otherwise we can't use that scene as it is.

Today, we are going to try a new approach to the seminar. As well as typing the answers to questions in this forum, we're also going to stream the seminar over the web. To view this stream, you must setup an account at this website:
http://www.ustream.tv/ : After you setup your account, run a search for our username: DB-Animation
You will be prompted for a password to access the stream. The password is: logical
Special thanks to Jeremy Hopkins for the research into this service.
At this time, I've been unable to view the live test stream over the same network we're streaming from using a different username but other Don's Club members had no difficulty watching the live test stream of our Fat Dog, Kelly.

Let's see how it works out.

Hi Don!
Hope you had some wonderful christmas days!
Here's my question:
I'm anxious to hear what you think about 'The Princess and the frog'! Do you think that Disney and 2D animation is back? Do you think that more traditional films will follow now?

lavallelee

Hey Don, I tried drawing Rigby.

And another question:
What do you think about 'Motion capture' in 3D animation? Can you still call it 'animation', when all the movement is 'produced' from a real actor? Isn't it a bit like 'cheating'? I saw 'Avatar' where they also used motion capture and it was so beautiful! I think that it would not have been so good if they had not used it... To my mind it isn't so important how you do it, but how the result is in the end. What do you think?

lavallelee
12-30-2009, 03:52 PM
You talked in your book about "The Blue Note" which is a passage to creativity. Sometimes when I work on stuff I am similar to turning everything off and being in a certain mode or in another world.

I am wondering ways to get into that mode, how can I figure out where that is. How do you do it?

Sorry if my question don't make sense, I tried to word it the best I could.

madanimator
12-30-2009, 03:56 PM
Oh, and I've got another question:
In his book 'The animator's survival kit' Richard Williams first lesson is to put off the music and any other noise so you can concentrate on your animation only. Well... I really want to do everything he tell me, but this? Don, is it really THAT important to animate in silence? Often I'm most inspired when I hear music - especially film music. What would be your advice?

madanimator
12-30-2009, 04:00 PM
And (I think) my last question for today:
:)
I'm working for the first time on a lip sync animation with two characters. Now, I read in 'The Illusion of life' that the focus of the audience must be on one of the characters at a time, not on the two characters at the same time. So when the one character is speaking, the other one shouldn't act so much. But how less should he move without seeming lifeless?
What should I think about when doing lip sync animation with two (or more) characters? (hopefully I can show you my animation the next seminar)

Hello, Don

I was present at a Milt Kahl lecture in Beverly hills last spring. And as the panal speakers were reminising about him , it seems that everybody was enjoying talking about his harsh critisisms and outbursts. I Kind of liken it to the comedian Don Rickles, even though his harsh, rash humor was directed to you, later you feel honored that he even showed you attention. Can you talk about an encounter you had with Kahl where he either critisised you or praised you. I'm sure it must have been memoriable. Richard Williams recounted an unpleasant incident in his book, hahaha hopefully the moments you had with Milt were no where near as Raw as that.-a.j.

Since questions are a little light this week, this is a question from a themanwithgoodtaste

I know once you thought that all animation is inherently musical, that it takes little to make characters sing. Have you changed your mind now?

hello Don How is your day going?

what do you think about making animated films with more adult like storys?, not like ralph bakshi! but more like on the lines of Dark Crystal!

I can draw very fluently but when Im animating its almost as if Ive lost the ability, I dont know if you have had this problem when first starting? Do you have any advice , or ideas that may be able to help me get past this invisible wall

To Dave: In the Animatic, there's not the final version of my scene. It's a very early version. You can find the final version here: http://donbluthanimation.com/videos.php?showvideo=186
Is it possible to change it? It would be cool!

Hello Don

I received Digicellflip book program as a christmas present, and so far it has worked great. An awsome miriacle program. However, I looked into another program called Toonboom....It seems more tailored to Flash animators. However, it seems that 2d people can use it to zoom in your scenes, and color backgrounds better than toonboom. Thats what it seems to me anyway, I havn't tried it. Have you found toonboom or any other animation program you useful enough to reccomend to all of us.

Hi Don,

First time here so forgive me if you've answered some of these before.

1. Any plans for new prints of your Storyboard for Animation book?

2. I am a huge fan of Glen Keane. Just wondering what your thoughts are on his work and any stories you can share of working with Glen?

3. What's the last film you've seen in the theater and thoughts?

Thanks Don!

How much time do you spend getting into the heart of a char before you put pencil to paper?

madanimator
12-30-2009, 04:40 PM
I think, what an audience want to see always change. I think, no one would nowadays want to see something like 'Pinocchio' or so. But to my mind those films are the best, which are timeless. Do you know such films? And how can one produce a film that is timeless? And what do you think do the people in our time want to see?

Hello, Don

Last night I decided to expirement more with Digicell by doing an animation of Santa Clause blowing on a trumpet. however, as I was doing the animation, I paid more attention to the anticipation of him blowing on a trumpet than anything else. What I mean is for the majority of the animtion, I only animated his head approaching the mouth peice, and didn't draw in the rest of his body till last. Is it good form for me to animate a little bit at a time, or should I pay attention to all the elements of the body at once?

George

Thanks for the answers Don!

A few more.

1. I really want to draw well in character design. Are you still planning on releases dvd's in character design?

2. Any thoughts on the latest character designs in animation film or tv?

3. Do you have a favorite character design you've done? Or a favorite in general from animation?

Thanks,

George Castro

HI all. Seemed like the video aspect was a hit! I can't believe I missed it though...anyways, Dave..on playing back the video clips, the audio is really low..so low I can't hear Don. The volume is up on the video all the way as well as on my lap top and still I cant hear him. Was curious if anyone else experienced this with the videos? How was it live?? Thanks

This was amazing!.. I've been unable to attend a live seminar now for several months, due to school and then job obligations,...so late at night my only option was to collect "leftovers" after the live seminar was already long finished. Thank you for coming up with this exciting new approach to the seminar!.... :)
I agree with Arif!... you guys have to come up with a system that allow us to download these great conversations with Mr.Bluth... I would love to be able to listen to these clips on my desktop without relying all the time on my internet connection....:o
...and finally thank you for that awesome Milt Kahl anecdote it was really enlightening! :D
