Hi there,
I just joined up and thought, since everyone's showing off their drawings I'd show off mine too. I don't normally like to show off my sketches. First I suppose a little introduction is necessary. Every time I get on I sign onto UStreamTV and draw. Sometimes they're drawings for friends, sometimes they're drawings for myself. Overall, I have the greatest time doodling for my friends. The sketches here are representative of that fact.

I didn't draw her character, but good eye, I forgot to mention that for the top left of sketch dump 9, I used a picture she drew as reference. I corrected some gravity issues the character had. I did it mainly as an excersize in fine times. :)

Thanks Izzy and Jeremy! I usually never know how a sketch is going to turn out until I'm about half way through it.
Here's some more pictures, a lot of sketches going back to about 10 days ago. You'll see a few styles in the sketches below. If you spot them all you've got a good eye. I got a few model sheets from some old Hanna-Barbera cartoons and thought the styles were cute so I had to try them out. Anyway, I'm off to my day job...that I probably shouldn't quit. HA!

You have a terrific sense of proportion in your drawings, but what I like most of all about them is the attitude you've given them. Have you ever tried you hand at animation. Is there any history there? The ultimate thrill is seeing the characters come to life on paper. I hope you can join us in the Cyber garage project.

@Don: Let me preface this by saying, when I saw that you had replied, I nearly fell out of my chair. I have been such a huge fan of your work…I don’t think I can gush enough!
All that said, I’d like to thank you for your comments on my sketches and drawings! To give you a bit of background I have never taken any formal classes besides those offered in grade school and high school (I’m 30 now) for art/drawing. Everything I do is self taught and has taken me a lifetime to get to this point (which still isn’t that far by most standards). While I know I am by no means an expert, I feel like the idea of bringing a character to life on paper has often been a driving force in my continued interest in the craft, but I lack the confidence in my ability to be able to do it.
Animation fascinates me. The idea that a drawing could come to life, that essentially the character becomes ‘real’ and moves and feels, AND ME BEING THE ONE TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN, was the whole idea behind my continued progress into my hobby. I have read books on animation and have seen clips and tutorials on how people do it, but for whatever reason I seem to have this mental block about applying it myself. I have begun to gather the materials necessary to take a crack at it once again. Your comments have inspired me to try again. I am putting your Nuts and Bolts DVD on order right after I finish writing this post. :)
I would love to join the Garage Project, but I’m afraid that having had VERY LIMITED experience animating before, I wouldn’t be very useful, but I will certainly give it a shot. Thank you for putting all of this together. To have a mentor to draw inspiration from is very important, and you’ve provided that for us. You sir, are amazing!
@CanAur:
HA! Yes, I love emotions. I prefer the ‘pushing’ of an expression just to see a character go from “Happy” to “Estatic” in a single stroke of the pencil is amazing!

I tried my hand at a character turn around ala Don Bluth. Having the insight of a master is something that I've always wanted :)
I'm sure there's some errors in it, but it got me to think about the way I was drawing and how things look. Sadly I don't have an animation table, lightbox, pegboard and things yet. I have some things on order. I'll be able to try again then :)
Wow that character turnaround is really nice and I love the character x3

@ Hana: Thanks :) Your user Icon is hilarious. I always say Hannah Banana instead of Hannah Montana or Hanna Barbera...In retrospect it could go with any name with the same number of syllables...FUNNY! anyway, YES!! Thank you :) Cougari's been a work in progress for about 10 years now. She started off as a Lion King fan character but over the years she's evolved into a character of her own. I really enjoy drawing her.

This one is for a friend of mine. I really enjoy drawing his character and he was looking for a commission from me. This is a preliminary version that I sketched on a piece of paper and scanned into the computer, inked and colored in open canvas. I have just been introduced to inking and coloring in that program and its just fantastic! its great for line weights and things, anyway, ENJOY IT :D

05-13-2009, 02:59 AM
Thanks Hana!! I wanted him to feel that sort of way. I made about a dozen passes before I came up wtih that one. I'll post the other passes once the contest is over.
For now though, I watched Don's video called: Loosen Up and Minimum Lines
I determined that maybe my sketches were a bit tight. I mean, I usually start with the base before darkening and tightening the lines, but I figured I'd give a shot of very simple drawing. Beside the very simple base would be the finished drawing. Click the image to see it large.

05-23-2009, 08:36 AM
personally I think its the best way to prepare for animating any character. drawing them a lot helps you to not only learn how they are constructed and what they will look like from any angle but it also helps you undestand the character more and get a feeling for how they will act in any situation.
jeremyhopkins
05-23-2009, 08:46 AM
Great work breaking these down! When everything is ready I'd like to make a thread that just collects drawings and pencil tests from everyone. Your drawings look good overall but watch out for size relationships of the feet to the body and the space between the tip of the eyes and the skull in the 3/4 view. Sasha has a chin too in the front and 3/4 and it helps her feel more solid. Just tiny nitpicks for nice work! Can't wait to see your animation!
Nanook123
05-23-2009, 09:06 AM
Thanks Will :D
@ Jeremyhopkins:
I'll work on her a bit more :) I've only just begun. If you do post up a thread for all the CGP drawings and animations, I'll post up in there or whatever :) I just thought these would be better suited here as they are simply showing development in the style and character. I tried to incorporate a small chin in some of the sketches, it may not have come in very clear as some of them were pretty rough. I'm trying to break myself of the habit of drawing HUGE feet...coz I do that. LOL Thanks for the input!
jeremyhopkins
05-25-2009, 06:31 AM
Oh, I gotcha. Yeah, they're looking really great.. I'm just being nitpicky :P I've made a thread for people to post their work and you're more than welcome to post more of your nice drawings there too! That way then we can all help each other.

This is my first attempt at animating anything. I know the ears do some buggy things, but overall i'm pretty pleased with myself for simply throwing myself in there. I used the Fievel march cycle as a reference, but once I got going it seemed to go a little better than I thought. I can't help but feel a little daunted by the task, but I hope that you grasp how excited I am that I was able to do anything at all.

Very nice drawings. What I like about your work is the attitude on your characters faces. It always promises that there is something going on in your characters head.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much Mr. Bluth for your kind words! My apologies for the late response, I have been swamped lately at work and just struggling to get back online. :)
