It's the little revelations like this that really pull us in to these stories.
You've got me wondering about these guys adventures again.

I can't help but think that whatever you can't make into an animation would still be prime material for a written novel featuring Crackerland characters.

Keep it up Lavalle! (and lock those ideas in a safe place)

Hehe! I love him. :)

The extra bulk up top is something that works really well on him.
Getting the exaggeration into the large upper body in comparison to small lower body would really lend well to animate.

The thing I like most about these latest life drawings is how loose and natural they are.

You haven't numbered these yet but I assume you'll be asking Don for some feedback? If you do I'd be interested in seeing what areas of each of the drawings he likes (i.e. perhaps he could draw a circle around the areas that please his eye.

I suppose in a similar fashion he could circle those areas where something looks wrong but my thought here is to accentuate the positive. Anything inside the circle would be fit for minor refinement while anything not circled would by extension be an area worth studying.

I'd be curious to see how that mirrors my own thoughts on your drawings.

I was very happy with Don's comments on my life drawing. I can still remember showing him my first life drawings back in 09' I needed to improve so much!

Thanks Andrew, if I can, I will be doing life drawing for life. So I can keep improving.

One thing that I need to learn how to draw are weapons. I usually draw guns exactly the same way since I was a young pup. So here is a machine gun study!

For props it'd be good to see what you are using for reference. Assuming you aren't just creating from imagination. My suggestion would be to put the reference somewhere in with the drawing for all to see.

Outside of reference my thought here would be that with man-made objects such as these you've really got to accentuate the straight lines and planes in the object. In other words... the opposite of an organic character/drawing... with emphasis on more rather than less symmetry. In my experience man made objects are just full of symmetry.

As I was typing this I was looking around my living room to see if I was completing misinterpreting my thoughts on this but the evidence seems to speak for itself... almost everywhere I look I see man made things with a great deal of straight lines and symmetry. There are literally thousands of rectangles two selves full of video cases account for a lot of these). Even the softer shapes (couch and chair) have a lot of symmetry.

Interesting. You've helped me learn something new again today. :)

Added: Don't be afraid to draw some straight lines even with a ruler if necessary to get at that straightness.

You are really hitting your stride here.
I find those to be wonderful layouts. (specifically for limited animation)

I especially like the solid construction and the simplicity.
That is something I need to work on myself. I can always add more detail but it's harder to take it away once it's already there.

I have to say I like the logo work you did on the word 'Escape!'
If you could write/draw out the alphabet in that lettering I can turn it into a Font set for you. You'd be able to type in that font style and it'd be good practice for me.

As far as any sneak preview is concerned... you know I'm always game! :)

I would encourage you to do some layouts that aren't restricted to the standard rectangular screen. Work in some layouts that will facilitate panning and camera movement. Draw a top view plan and chart out where each of the backgrounds would be if seen through a camera (i.e. actually draw the camera). If this isn't clear please let me know and I'll be more specific.

Edit: I understand these may all be studies you've done from the backgrounds of animated sequences. That doesn't detract a bit from how cool these are to me. Just as with your gun I'd love to see a side by side comparison but understand that when viewing scenes on TV that'd be a tough order to fill. The results speak for themselves.

I agree. If you are drawing those as fast as I think you are I'm impressed by your storytelling. Each sketch really captures the essence of the moment.

I just purchased Pocahontas the 2 disc set and it came with TONS of bonus features. One special feature was Glen Keane drawing Pocahontas and I thought I would draw as he taught! WOW! Does he draw really fast!

One thing I immediately note with Glen Keane is his utter confidence when putting down his lines. He's not as concerned with accuracy as much as he is with the emotional content there. If his first line creates a form that is too wide in his next pass will run on the inside of that one and narrow it. Don does the same with his penciling while darkening the lines that he knows are in the right place.

Of course with Glen's approach it does help to have a huge thick pencil that forces you ignore the piddly details.

If you have access to a large white board you can get at a lot of the same speed in drawing (and even be able to erase and refine the important details). Be sure to take a digital photo of the drawing after completion so you can manipulated it digitally. :)

I have been watching a lot of Glen Keane youtube videos. The one where he flips the Aladdin scene is just wow!

Man! It's been a while since I replied to your thread, Lavalle. Good to see you've been keeping yourself so busy! I like the various studies and designs you've been posting. :)

Regarding your latest picture, my feelings for it are kind of a mixed bag. The layout is good. It's not a boring design by any stretch of the imagination! The colors are nice and vivid. The character also really adds a lot to the overall composition. Nice work! :D

There are some things you could really stand to improve on, and I hope you're not offended at me pointing these out. For starters, you used a font for the title and menu options. This looks kind of lazy. If you hand draw a title graphic and maybe put a graphic behind it, (like a beach ball, for example) your title will really pop! (Hopefully not like a beach ball! XD) Next, the actual background also looks too simple. Try to add some more depth and shape to the clouds, make the ground level and if it's grass, add some random grass blades or plants poking up for variety. Finally, try to vary the thickness of your lnk lines. I'm assuming you draw with a tablet with pressure sensitivity so this shouldn't be difficult.

Again, my apologies if I've offended you, Lavalle. Keep up the good work, man! Oh! And lots of luck to you on your Cracker Land pitch! :D

Thanks for the critique, you are right. I am terrible at bgs! I know it! I have improved with pencil and paper character drawing. But backgrounds I usually make look flat. Same with coloring, their is so much I still need to learn.

I really want to be able to draw out a background with great perspectives, then paint them to be amazing!

There's no shame in admitting that you're bad at backgrounds, Lavalle. They're one of the hardest things to get down in a picture. Perspective can be really tricky, too. Just don't be discouraged by your setbacks. :)

In animation, you're striving to create the illusion of life, and in still images and backgrounds, you're aiming to give the illusion of depth. Even with simple colors and shapes it's possible to accomplish this. I'd suggest you start with outdoor landscapes and then tackle urban settings or interiors later as they can be more difficult and require a lot of skill with perspective. When you get the chance, go outdoors and take a sketchbook with you. Try drawing your surroundings - trees, houses, roads, and so on. Try drawing them from different angles. I can't remember which artist said this, but what you're trying to do is become a student of nature.

Probably the best advice I could give would be to just take your time and not rush yourself. You've got some real talent and you're a very creative and imaginative artist, Lavalle. Just keep soaking up knowledge from Don and other sources and you'll be drawing those really awesome painted backgrounds before you know it. ;)

Thanks Rodney. I have been wanting to take some kind of classes on layout and backgrounds here in orlando, but they are costly. $250 or more for a single day. For watercolor backgrounds class, painting, they even have some instructional life drawing.

One day. I just hope to get a better understanding of layout and be able to do it well.

Gave it a few try's that was the best I could do. I would recommend putting in some sort of warning when the flight hat wears out. It always seems to drop me right on a rock. :laughing:

I have some AWESOME NEWS!!! NASA SENT BUMBY INTO OUTER SPACE!
A few weeks back I saw advertisements from NASA on sending your name and picture into outer space! I thought this would be a great way to immortalize Bumby the Manatee! So I entered Bumby and NASA accepted him! I think he might be even the first cartoon character to be sent into space this way! Here is the certificate NASA gave me proving that Bumby is in SPACE!!

What if you pinpointed his pupils to make it seem as though he has poor vision or doesn't particular care for the sunlight? Then when he pulls his glasses (sunglasses?) down his pupils might become extremely big.

Just a stray thought... I like him as is!

I plan on putting him in a upcoming cartoon! Today Stan Sakai (creator of Usagi Yojimbo) said he loved the design of the mole so I have to put him in a toon! Now he just needs a name.

I'm enjoying this too much too critique anything at the moment. (I don't want to spoil the fun I'm having watching this guy)

The principles of animation are important but the entertainment value alone has hooked me on your concept.

If I can think of any one aspect to critique it might be the perspective on this one. I must confess however that adjusting the camera's perspective down a couple notches might ruin what you've already got. Perhaps just before this shot there might be a short establishing shot from a higher angle?

I'm enjoying this too much too critique anything at the moment. (I don't want to spoil the fun I'm having watching this guy)

The principles of animation are important but the entertainment value alone has hooked me on your concept.

If I can think of any one aspect to critique it might be the perspective on this one. I must confess however that adjusting the camera's perspective down a couple notches might ruin what you've already got. Perhaps just before this shot there might be a short establishing shot from a higher angle?

Thank you! I agree about perspective, still one of my worst subjects. In the scene actually it starts out a distant shot so you see the whole table then zooms into the pizza box and he wakes up for the first time!

What is up with the funky sequence numbering?

I animated straight ahead and had to go back 4 times. So everytime I would go back and add something say frame 33. I would add drawings after 33 so I would number them 33.1, 33.2, 33.3 etc

Then if I had to make changes to an already made scene like 33.1, then i would do 33.1.1. I know im doing this wrong, it has been some time since I did paper animation! Forgive me! The real way of doing it escaped my mind.

What was the correct way of numbering when you go back and change things or is it just erasing?

I don't know that there is a correct way per se.
I believe it was Warner Brothers that used the Alphanumeric after the Number:

Several different methods have been used and that usually depended on the studio.

As I understand it the primary reason you want to maintain the standard of Odd numbers for animation on twos and Odds and Evens on ones is so that others can pick up your animation (or xsheet) and immediately know what you are working out. The xsheet is where the primary timing is normally all worked out.

If I recall Don's instruction correctly (and please ask him during the weekly seminar!) he'd likely suggest you erase and renumber.

Of course in a pinch even Don might resort to his own numbering but when working with transfers to film/video it's generally best not to invent a new way of numbering.

Preaching to myself mode on: If we are struggling with the timing/numbering that is a good indicator that we are not taking advantage of the xsheet to plan our animation.

Now,having said this... please don't take me to task when you eventually see some of my own crazy numbering schemes. We have to experience these solutions first hand. I like to occasionally experiment and I've come up with odd methods of frame numbering placement (but note that I try not to mess with the classical method of numbering). One method I tested has the numbers running accross the top (or alternatively the bottom) in a way that allows all the numbers to appear together when all images are composited. In this way if there is a number missing you know which frame you've left out.

An alternate method I was messing with but tossed out because I could see it working in a collaborative environment was to create a nine section square that is shaded in to indicate the frame (or frames) you are on. Sorry... I'm straying off topic...

Bottom line: If you are working alone you can use your own numbering but it's a lot easier to misread those if you deviate from the standard. Expecting someone else to read them correctly (i.e. critiques from Don) could cause unnecessary confusion that you'd be better off without.

All this for discussions sake. I was just fascinated by your numbering. :)

To recap for those looking in that may not fully understand the generally accepted method of numbering:

Animation on ones can be identified by drawings that are numbered using every number (both even and odd):

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc.

Animation on twos is numbered using only odd numbers:

1, 3, 5, 7 9 etc.

The even frames are copies of the previous odd numbered drawing.
This equates to:

1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5 and so on.

Occasionally you may have a sequence that has animation on both ones and twos. In a very slow action you may have to add in more drawings but as the action picks up the pace you may be able to repeat more drawings. Compare this with the terms Slow-In and Slow-Out were a motion cushions into or out of a pose.

So... what does this do for me Rodney!!!
When you see an even number on a drawing you know that your sequence is being drawn on ones. So, you have to draw all of the drawings. If you don't see any even numbers then you are on twos (but watch for the need to have inserted inbetween drawings!). When on twos you only have to draw every other drawing. Each drawings is copied.

This leads me to another observation Lavalle.
I note that you have a drawing #0. Personally, I love this but others will surely find this to be strange numbering.

Yes I he does say that.

My original straight ahead was went to 33 on 2s. Then I went back and added a blink. Around frame 3 or 5. I didn't want to erase all the numbers and re-number 7-33 (on 2s). Whenever I erase the top right of the paper maybe 5% of the time i might accidentally mess up the paper. Then it might ruin the drawing.
