I saw that everyone else was making a topic and continuously adding to it, so this will be mine! I will start with a few of my cartoons ive made in flash over the years. There are more, but these few I think are my best. If you want to see all my cartoons head over to www.flashcartoons.org (http://www.flashcartoons.org)

Please note, that all of these cartoons were made straight ahead, no xsheets/dopesheets. I did however do storyboards for most, or written scripts.

You got a long way to go with the character animation itself - but that might be just icing on the cake when you get there.
Your cinematic story telling skills are OK to good.
A lot of jokes miss (for me) as being just derivative or juvinile.
When the jokes are good I laugh out loud. Your timing overall seems quite good.

I was most entertained by
Dr. Dimitri - Episode 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1z_iTc60zI
and
Mountain Top http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9TBUaAX330

I just had to go back a second and third time to see all the gags in the scene where the good doctor says "That's weird" :D The timing of that scene was perfect!

I surely hope you are getting the chance to show these to "live" audiences just so you get a clear feel from their reactions of what really works.

nice bird animation there : D, I can spot a couple of things I would change on the wings, the shapes seem to change on some of the frames. If they were kept pointy like on frame 1 and frame 5 then I think it would feel a lot better. Other then that I dont see anything that stands out. Keep up the good work c:

You are being critical of your own work - that's good. I really do think that you've done a great job. You could loosen up a bit. You drawing are too tight - too clean. The bird flight would be more satisfying if I cold feel the bird's back muscles as the genesis of the wing action. Each time the wing pumps downward it could push the body slightly upward. If you want to move up to the next level. Let the bird draw closer to the camera showing more his chest, then distance him, showing more of his back, using the same 4 drawing flap cycle. (this will require more drawings than 4.) This will be about 2 seconds, or 24 drawings shot on 2's. Make it happen.

Hi Lavalle, I know you felt frustrated with your drawing sometimes but don't worry, you're doing really great. I'm really hesistant to red line one of Don's characters because I don't know if I'm drawing them well enough. So I'll just say, keep doing what you're doing because you are improving so much with each drawing. It's very impressive and inspiring Lavalle!

lavallelee
05-13-2009, 02:34 PM
Will: you should draw mrs. brisby too!

Hana: thanks! i really tried my hardest. i think it turned out well

Brian: that is my goal to be able to draw it perfect!

Jeremy: thanks for all your help, like you said im going to just keep trying and trying

Here is the swallow, this time im trying to draw poses i come up with. I also changed one of the drawings to make the swallow look a bit different. (i don't think he turned out that well)

I agree, the ones you picked out seem the best.

Hmm... the only one I can say is honestly dislikable is the top middle one. The beak on it is just not quite right. Try a couple creatively placed lines to show the beak more instead of just the outline and center. I think you know what I mean... Otherwise I like all of them! Good job.

lavallelee
05-13-2009, 03:32 PM
thanks guys :)

one thing i noticed when comparing them to the actual character design Don did, is that i made the head go to high up. His forhead doesn't stretch that high, more of a circle. The two bottom left ones, are i think the correct head shape.

thanks guys! and now for something completly different ;)

today i did some Open Class, life drawing (meaning no instruction) I would really like critiques of these life drawings, things i could do better, things i should try. Being that there is no instruction, i really am on my own when drawing. I tried finding the line of action, and basic shapes such as circles and squares too.

Anyway here they are, also every sunday now, i will have open class life drawing!! I am very happy i moved to Orlando!

hi lavallelee,

Isn't life drawing a lot harder than you think? I never had any instructed classes myself either but it looks like you have a good start and looseness to your lines.
The one thing I think you need to look at is depth of field of the character and also muscle and frame construction. The human body and all animal bodies are a genius of engineering. I would say go get an anatomy book of the human body and also study animal anatomy. Here is a link that I use sometimes if I get stuck on a look I want to achieve.

http://www.posemaniacs.com/blog/pose/

You can also find the link on my blog. I believe the same site has animal anatomy and poses such as a horse a cat and a couple other characters.

I would also go purchase a possible wooden maquette. (is that how thats spelled?) haha anyway, I use a few different ones of those as well. I can view this character in different situations and see how the body is basically framed so I can draw the depth of field or foreshortening if you will. I have five of these lil manikins so I can even pose up situations between other characters and I can see the whole scene. I know thats a bit extreme but thats what I do. weird huh?

Don't you dare give up on those classes either. If they are free and or inexpensive continue going. There are other people there you will meet and get pointers from. Always take the time looking over another artist shoulder and ask tons of questions! It's the only way I've learned.

Best to you my friend I know you'll succeed!

John:D

lavallelee
05-17-2009, 12:59 PM
actually there was an animator sitting next to me, and i was like cool!! as for the wooden mannequin i have one already :)

thanks for the pointers, and its every sunday for only $10 for 2hrs of open class, life drawing. Also awesome site, thanks. When i get stuck or have questions i will look to the poses.

thanks Will! i think im very lucky i found life drawing here, when i was in minnesota there was none...

anyway! today i took 3hrs to animate Fievel run cycle. i used flipbook pro to make the video (first time too!)

Good on you for going to those life drawing classes :D I hope to go to some maybe during the holidays. They'll do wonders.

I did have 2 short classes with a live model previously with instruction and there are a few different tasks you can do that I'll list here for you you want to try them.
- 30 second gesture sketches
- 1 minute gesture sketches
- 5 minute sketch
- Negative space sketch
- Only tones (So don't draw any lines. Use the side of your pencil to capture the form via lighting)
- Draw with your non drawing hand
- Blind contour. Don't look at your paper but instead only look at the subject you are drawing and slowly try to control your hand on coordination with your eye.

That's all I can remember for now. Yours are nice and loose :D My teacher said you should try spending more time looking at the subject instead of your paper so you draw what you see and not what you believe you see.

Also the Fivel cycle looks super cute. It'd be great to get it repeating a few times so we can see it properly :D

In the open class, they did do different timing. Like 5 min, 5 min, 10 min, 20 min then a 40 min timed poses.

Here are some i just uploaded from sunday, i was embarrassed to show them because I dont think they were as good as the others. But i think the only way to improve is to show my bad drawings as well as good drawings and get you guyzes opinions.

Sorry Laval, I couldn't tell what was going on with the run. If cycle the run a few times or maybe try uploading to vimeo, it might work better.

ya, youtube took out most of the frames (make sure you watch in HQ)

here is a longer one that repeats

I know it can be embarassing to post one's life drawings. I keep stalling on posting mine... XD

I wanted to pipe in and say your sense of proportion is really good. All your figures look like they're roughly correct in terms of how they're put together - I fail utterly at this, so please take that as a compliment!

thanks Penumbra, this was my 2nd time doing life drawing! im hoping in a year or so i will be great at it! thanks for your kind words

and thanks brio!

I'm actually missing a drawing in both of those videos i just uploaded... I kept staring at it, and it didn't feel right, then after going over video again and again, i saw i was missing a drawing!!!!! And it was extreme/drawing 1!! So i uploaded another Fievel Loop, this time with 11 drawings total on a loop on 2's

now i think it looks okay, but i have a long way to go

Fievel Run On 2's
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bC2EIBPr5_Y&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bC2EIBPr5_Y&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Fievel Run On 1's
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4FdJBjMXuyE&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4FdJBjMXuyE&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I really didn't mean to upload this to youtube so many times.. I wont make that mistake again. I will make sure i scan in all my images, then triple check. My first time with pencil tests! :o

Thanks it works now! Is this your first animation test? If it's your first, I'd say it's about 1000x better than my first animation which is great for you. You're doing the right thing by studying movement and how Fieval moves. If you simplify the detail down to basic shapes first, it'll help you plan out the movement without worrying about the detail. Just start with basic shapes and loosely plan out your run, then if you find you like the run, you can rub back those drawings with a kneaded eraser or lay another piece of paper on top and gently draw in the main volumes again. It makes it so much easier to track volume changes and make sure all parts are solid and well constructed.
If you try to do everything at once, sometimes the animation can become stiff or the volumes will shrink and grow. If you break it into steps:
1.) loosely and quickly animating the character volumes and making sure the action reads
2.) tying down the details, making sure the drawing is well constructed

Also if you spend too much time detailing, it'll be waste of time if the action doesn't work. If you work loosely with volumes first, if the action doesn't read, it's easy to throw away those drawings. Hope that helps!

thanks jeremy! this is my very first animation test on a lightboard, but i have been animating with a tablet for years now, before that with the mouse (everything digital)

switching to pencil drawings was tough at first, but i think im getting better

thanks for your advice, i will start with basic shapes first then worry about detail. In all honesty, i really dont like throwing away drawings, i tend to keep everything! i learn from my mistakes (which are many!)

hey lavallelee I just wanted to ask you if you could make an easy step by step guide about making high quality videos of your animation, and posting them in HQ on youtube :D that would be realy helpfull to me and i notice how great your animation slook on youtube :)

thanks

- Ive been working on my sasha run cycle got into 5 frames sofar- damn it takes long but its worth it you get this ontop of the world feeling. started 8:30 pm ended 10:40pm :), sofar I got everything moving smooth but the ears shrink lol. once I master the sasha character I think I can take on the fox :) -like don said go big or go home!

lavallelee
05-21-2009, 05:23 AM
John- the way youtube works is that i upload video that is huge width and height, they automatically make it high quality

In Flipbook, when you start a new file asks you which size, i choose NTSC 720x540, once you export the animation, it will be that size, and youtube will make it HQ :)

hope that helps

Here is my first attempt at Sasha

I love the faster of the runs. Her little teeny legs need to move quick if she's going to get away from that fox!

Your life drawings have a good feeling to them. Its hard to teach someone life drawing, its good that you've taken the initiative to jump right in and learn it!

Your Sasha's are really improving :) I can't wait to see more!

Here are some Sasha Attempts/Thumbnails when starting on the run cycle. I didn't use these

and next is my first attempt at Momma

http://www.donbluthanimation.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=38&pictureid=218

The first drawing was a copy i did, the drawing with 1st above it was my first time drawing it without copying, i think i did TERRIBLE!! the rest i think are okay, i think i understand how to make the face (forward position)

This run cycle has only 5 drawings, which is only one half of the run cycle. Basically the other half is the other leg cycle through. If that makes sense. This was a test to see if the first half looked good.

I see in a few of these you have been trying a stylization to the shoulders and hands, I even notice it on the face when your model was profiling. FEET are HARD to DRAW. As we talked about, she only looks a little bit like a zombie in the third one from the bottom.

I still think your life drawings are improving with every batch you post up. Thanks for showing them off :)

Lavalle,
The life drawings are very good. The first thing that came to my mind was Picasso. Your style is very reminiscent of his. The good news is it is heavy on design elements which are attractive to look at. Even more good news is the master designer of animation, Milt Kahl, professed that Picasso was his inspiration. You're in good company.

lavallelee
07-13-2009, 02:26 PM
Wow, thank you so much for those inspiring words. To say my style is similar to Picasso.. And even mention my name with Milt Kahl's. I hope to become a great artist and animator even more.

I won't let you down, or anyone down. I have a long way to go, but it is a journey I am willing to take. Thank you again Don. :)

Here are some drawings from Monkey See Monkey Do dvd.

I drew these on my lap, using a book for support.. Which is why they are a bit wobbly. The first drawing I did the right shoulder wrong. I made him too skinny.. I am not impressed with what I did in these drawings. I will keep trying.

Sorry Lavalle, I've missed the last few life drawings posts. It is really amazing to see you develop a style naturally. My suggestion is don't be afraid to switch modes. Keep in mind weight, how are the hips moving, which part of the body is twisting and turning, break down the body to simple shapes and remember that there is a skeletal system that provides structure. You have a great attitude and I hope you keep your personal style as well. Just keep in mind what the purpose of life drawing is for you as an animator. Here is a link (http://www.michaelspornanimation.com/splog/?p=1917) to Michael Sporn's blog where he posts a letter between Walt Disney and Don Graham and I hope you can print that out or keep it with you in your life drawn sketches. It's a really great reminder of why you're studying and working hard.

i watched Disney's Bambi 2 today, and on the special features there was a tutorial from Andreas Deja (Jafar, Scar, Lelo) showing how to draw thumper. He makes it look so easy, i gave it a shot. Doesn't look as good as his did but i tried. :)

I'm really enjoying your Gallery Lavalle.

If you haven't got copies of Walt Stanchfield's new books "Drawn to Life Vol 1 and 2" I would encourage you to save up your pennies for them.

Comparitively, they are a bit cerebral and quite unlike a lot of books that try to show you how to draw graphically. The books don't skimp in the graphics category. For me they are much easier to relate to than books such as Michael D. Mattesi's two books 'Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators' and 'Force: Character Design from Life Drawing'. Although they are definitely complementary. Stanchfield's books have more to do with animated movement (the gesture) while Mattesi's is more about design (understanding the forces that shape gestures). Considerably more artsyfartsy than Walt's Notes if'n you ask me.

If you have to purchase only one of the volumes I recommend Vol 1.
It gets right into the thick of things.

Note for those interested: Vol 2 has drawings of animals on the cover which led me to think it would be heavy on drawing animals. Only a few pages are devoted to that aspect so if you are looking to draw animals... few appear.

Keep up the great work Lavalle! :)

I have always enjoyed art and drawing. Also happy I am learning how to animate the right way. Traditionally!! :D

Here is my attempt at Arcs and Lines, from Don's tips. I added a few extra frames so it would loop

Lavalle,
Looking good!

I really like this video.
The importance of paths (arcs and lines) in animation cannot be overstated.

Your drawings are a little faint at this stage so it'll be nice to see them progress as you add detail and lock them down.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the results of the ears! :)

Don was definitely setting us up to learn with this video. Apply what Don suggests with the arcs to the ears and experience this first hand. If necessary draw the arcing line first for further clarity.

In the video do you notice anything about that second ear (Frame 3)?
Hint: Compare frame 1 to frame 5 and consider frame 3 as an inbetween. Draw that arcing line if necessary. What can be said of the movement of the ear and the potential for follow through on frame 3?

Keep at it Lavalle! :)

A music video even. You are making great strides!
I really love that blur frame. That worked great. :)

In the 'don't you hate it when someone makes a stupid suggestion to change an important plot point in your video' category.... here a silly suggestion:

Warning: Burrito video spoilers ahead!

You may have missed an opportunity at the end when the boy and girl run down the hill to get the burrito. There is an opportunity for the boy and girl to meet (they do meet in the film!) and it could be one of those boy gets girl/they all live happily ever after happy ending. It might even layer another reason for that to be the best burrito ever because of the outcome.

Who knows... maybe all the girls who saw the video would immediately share the video with their friends and they'd all go out to eat a burrito with their boyfriends.

Yeah... your ending is cute enough as is.
The thought occurred to me that 'love' could have been good addition tothe video so thought I'd offer the idea here. If a burrito brought you and your girlfriend together you'd think my idea was just swell. ;)

Keep this up and one of these days who knows, one of your videos might just go viral! :)

Working on the bouncing ball tutorials.

http://www.donbluthanimation.com/videos.php?showvideo=247

My own critique;

1.) I didn't use side guidelines so my ball is a bit wobbly/all over the place. (My next test I am starting from scratch, with guidelines.)

2.) I got confused on the dvd. The first bouncing ball you explained was 32 frame cycle. Then the first one with the pig was a 25 frame cycle. So I got a bit lost. (My next test will be better.)

3.) I recycled the frames, so when he is going down, those are the same as going up. (Next time will be all frames, no recycle. I did not see a point of finishing the cycle which was already broken, better to just start over.)

I am asking Don, what he thinks in the next seminar. I plan on doing this tutorial until I get it right!

Here is more Popeye drawings, drew some Olive Oil and a caricature of Popeye (not that great).

If you are wondering who the girl is in the drawing, I paused a shot on Popeye (Popeye Collection Vol 1, disc 3) where Popeye and Bluto are trying out to be a lifeguard to impress Olive Oil. So when Popeye was swimming by during the competition for the job, I saw these women behind in the background. Most of them were posed out like the models do in life drawing. It was fun to see that, so I drew one of the girls.

Looks like your drawings are coming along just fine, Lavalle. Just asking out of curiosity how long have you had an interest in animation?

lavallelee
12-31-2009, 06:15 AM
I have always loved cartoons, even one point of my life I wanted to prove to myself I could watch cartoons all day non-stop. I think I was in 5th grade.

When toy story came out in 1995, i knew that is what i wanted to do, bring life to characters, story and animation.

In 2000, (in 1 day it will be 10 years!) I started using Macromedia Flash and since then, animating has been my all time favorite thing to do.

Even when I try to learn something else like guitar, the whole time learning all I can think about doing is animation.

So really I guess 10 years, and only in this past year I have been learning traditional pencil animation. I can only guess where I would be now, if 10 years ago I started learning traditional, and not of tried to reinvent the wheel using flash.

Hope that answers your question. :D

Lavalle
Good work. Pay more attention on the "line direction." For example, the oval shape for the eyes should feel like an oval and not like a horseshoe. You must pay attention to drawing with more of the third dimension. The construction behind the character is as important as what we see in front.

Love that desk!.... damn I could use something like that myself, instead of relying on my miserable set up! (which consists of stacking the Bible and the dictionary on one side, my high school art books on the other and lay on top my drawing board with a light in the middle... :o)
I really like this one:
http://4mchan.org/Forum/gallery/2_03_01_10_10_26_57.jpeg
solid drawing and good linework, also I detect a certain spontaneity in the execution of this piece that makes it appealing, especially around the ear area.

From what I can understand in your description you are not too happy with the proportions of your Jessica Rabbit drawing, but to me that is something that in time you can work out through several takes of the same subject matter. Even though proportion wise this is not your final drawing I think that it is most important to always keep the execution of your artwork vibrant and spontaneous...helps the appeal of the drawing itself and communicate to those who view your work that you know what you are doing and it is just a matter of few attempts before you nail the drawing.

Does that makes sense?..:)

lavallelee
01-31-2010, 12:59 PM

It doesn't look that bad to me. The stand out thing for me in the first drawing is you flattened the eyes. You'll have to be real careful with that because the audience will want to maintain eye contact with your character. If it's not solid, then they'll have problems believing your guy is alive, thinking and feeling. Other than that, it's minor issues here and there that need closer observation. What matters most is you're studying and applying knowledge from the Preston Blair book to your work and improving your eye. It's an investment so you'll get back only what you put into something and you'll develop based on the time you can commit consistently. The only other piece of advice I can offer is when I do a self critique, I break up the process so it's drawing then critique. I try to judge it after the drawing is done like I'm looking at another person's work and even though it may sound harsh, it's not meant that way. If you become too emotionally attached to the drawing and can't step away or take failure too seriously, you might have to find some way to relax. If you can't you will eventually cause more harm than good with your studies. It's just a word of caution while you're practicing.

lavallelee
02-01-2010, 11:29 AM
I think the eyes are the hardest, and as Don says he starts over if he doesn't like the eyes. It is hard to look at my drawing as a viewer, kinda like looking at yourself on video! Which is different. I still have a long way to go, but I do see that I am improving and learning alot. :D thx Jeremy

Lavalle....

good going....i can give you one advice if you dont mind....find a mirror and study your own eyes.....there is nothing like to self study...you will find lots of elements in the eyes when you draw your own eyes(like pupil in the cornea, eyelid)apply a little highlight in the black spot...then, you will find your eyes are alive....learn this and then apply it again in your drawings........
you will find a good change....

Kindly Regards,
Arif.
