View Full Version : Storyboard and Animation Master Classes

Dave
03-26-2010, 01:15 PM
June 21st - 25th 2010.
Scottsdale, Arizona.

Don Bluth will be personally teaching this Master Class. The focus will be on the art of telling a story visually. Participants will review all of the elements necessary to create a professional storyboard sample for their portfolios. The course will include an analysis of the script, the story paradigm, the story plot points, study of character and story themes. Also included will be an analysis of music in creating a mood for your boards.

Class size is limited to fifteen seats. There are no prerequisites for this course. Attendees are not required to bring any drawing materials.

July 5th - 9th 2010.
Scottsdale, Arizona.

This program is perfect for the professional or student that wants to learn animation at a faster pace. The course will take place over a one week period and attendees will be required to animate one scene with in-betweens during that time. Your rough pencil test scene will be cut into a planned production reel that has been designed for all of the enrolled students. The class will be small; not more than fifteen students. The goal is to create an environment similar to an actual production house during a real production. Don Bluth will personally teach the class and critique each student’s work.

Thanks Don and Dave for putting this together and making this happen! I'm thrilled about this opportunity. Both classes sound awesome. I'm in for animation.

Thanks for the update.

The second link didn't work for me but (for those interested) the information can be found farther down the page via the first link.

I'm still all in for the animation masterclass. I would like to know more about attendance/reservations as it'll be important to lock in those dates as early out and as economically as I can.

This is great, I've been waiting for more info. I have a few questions I was wondering about though.

I noticed in the overview it states "This course was designed for serious professionals and students that are interested in learning animation techniques." I'm certainly not a professional, and I'm still not that great at animation. So, I was wondering if I could go to these classes, or is it only for students with decent animation skills?

Enrollment for this one-week course is $1000. The tuition fee does not cover food or accommodations.
No refunds on partial participation!

What is the refund policy? I don't mind paying now for my seat, but what if I got sick the week of the classes? Would I get a refund if that happened?

Thanks much. I appreciate it.

Dave

Lavalle asked before if he could make payments on the course. If that's a viable option for anybody that wants to go to the class then that would be fine with us.
Participants that want to make payments can send their payments through PayPal to sales@donbluthanimation.com

Don't forget to make a comment about which course you're making a payment for.

There's also been concerns about the refund policy for potential participants. I'm currently writing up the refund policy for the events. Everybody will receive a 100% refund if they cannot make the trip up to 24 hours before the scheduled date.

Some of you probably don't know this but Hotel Rates in Arizona actually drop by up to 50% for the summer months due to the extreme heat. Furthermore, many offer food and beverage coupons when you book a room.
A few years back, my wife worked as a manager at Resort Suites, Scottsdale and they converted an apartment complex into a golf resort. What's ironic is they don't even own a golf course!
Having said that, some of the rooms can sleep up to eight people since it was, in fact, an apartment complex. All the rooms have kitchens, and come 2,3,4 bedrooms.
Maybe a few of you guys could team up and get a room between you???

It's been a while since we were there but I'm sure the rates are still pretty economical for the dates in question.
By now means am I pushing this hotel; I don't even like the new managers but it's close to the venue and they have a small bus that will take participants to the location.

I like the idea of sharing rooms as that would allow the dialogue/drawing amongst attendees to continue into the night.

At the moment I'm planning to stay at Luke AFB. I know its pretty close nearby. If that doesn't pan out I'll look into xonasuites. Sound like being there would likely save me the price of a rental car.

Thanks Dave!

Rodney,
I live five minutes from the base. It's not that close to the venue. I drive 90-100 miles approx round trip to the office here and the office is close to the venue. If you're staying at the base though, I can give you a lift to the venue unless you're renting a car for the week.

It looks like the map I was referencing greatly decieved me. I would have guessed 20-30 minutes (in heavy traffic). Its been many years since I visited the Phoenix area and I don't have any real concept of the layout of the land there.

If I stay on base I'd be thrilled to travel with you to the venue.

Dave do we have to book now to get the Summer rate or do we book later? Also, how is the Mariott at MacDowell Mountains? That looks like the closest one.. I was trying to find a place where I wouldn't need a car. But if there's a shuttle from Xona maybe thats the best bet.

Dave,
I'm trying to work out my schedule so I can attend the animation workshop. I'm in Southern California so, I'll probably drive out.

What materials will students need to bring along? Will the classroom have light tables and disks? What about paper?

The lighter my load the more chance I have of riding my motorcycle instead of the truck.

Thanks,

I'm really excited about this, you can count me in for the animation workshop!

If the Xona has a shuttle that'll go to where we need to be, then that's probably where I'll be heading. I agree that I think it'd be cool if the lot of us could be nearby each other after the class, it'd really build a community feeling. Plus, dividing the cost among a larger group of people makes sense. Haha, maybe I'm just trying to mooch. If anyone else is going to the Xona too, lets try to coordinate something together.

So I'm definitely going to do this. I just need to get more room stuff confirmed before completely committing.

You guys don't know me yet, but I'm a coworker/friend of Owen Welsh. He's the one who's pushed me into doing this.. all that 2d talk gets me anxious.. I haven't done it in so long..

But if I were going to go, I'd want to get the same hotel and such as the rest of you. As it was posted: being able to talk and work through the night with other people in the same class, would be awesome. I'm down for sharing rooms, car fares, whatever. I promise I'm nice! :D

Paid, now.

Just need to work out flights, hotel, and car possibly. I may end up splitting a car at least, with Owen, but I'd imagine they'll be 4 doors, so more people are welcome as well :)

Still figuring out a room too. I'm totally up for splitting that!

whoops- that is, paid for the animation class. as much as I've love.. LOVE to do both, thats too much time I'd have to take off work. if they were back to back maybe.. but spread out. only can swing the animation one.

Is anybody going to be there directly on the 5th of July?? My flight arrives at 6:34 a.m.........and I heard the cab ride from the airport to the hotel is a whopping 60 bucks!!! If anybody out there is arriving about the same time..let me know..it be great to cab together and split the fare. <:)

Hey guys, Just a heads up that myself and Owen got a car we'll be using from 3pm on the 4th of July until roughly 11am on the 11th of July.

We're happy to give rides- and encourage people to ask for them! be it from the airport, to the airport, and back and forth between the class. We are not a cab though, so it has to mostly coincide with where we'll be going and when.

Staying at the Xona, and for those still booking rooms.. I personally don't mind sharing a room since mine will have 2 beds in it.

Car users: All we ask is that you help out with a little paying for the ride, if you need it. but we promise it will be cheaper than a cab! :)

Room occupants: same deal. split the cost, and we'll both be richer!

I'll be leaving from Tampa Bay, FL the 4th of July as well, I'll be glad to split hotel and car rental with anyone who is kind enough to hit me up with a msg.

Is the class full yet? I have a busy summer schedule but I am sorely tempted to go to this masterclass out of fear it may be the only chance to do this. I see that the course is designed for "serious professionals and students," but what level of experience is required?

I am enrolled in the online Sequential Art program at the Savannah College of Art and Design and taking classes in storyboarding, scriptwriting, and character design, but I have not taken any animation classes. I am decent at drawing and I feel I could pick things up quickly. I want very much to learn animation but right now my only option is to teach myself, unless I can take a workshop like this one, and certainly Mr. Bluth would be the best teacher I could imagine. Advice is appreciated.

Hey guys, just a heads up that i got my room slot filled. By newcomer WilSaturn actually.
But for anyone still looking to book (or maybe even something you can work out after the fact) I thought I would share a special deal the Xona is offering. But you have to specifically ask for it.

They have something on their site listed as.. stay 2 nights, play some golf, get the 3rd night free. Well you don't have to play golf, and the 3rd night is free can double over.. so that out of 6 nights, you only pay for 4. Myself and a few others have done this. I suggest taking this approach to emailing them:

"I'm inquiring about booking a room between the dates of July 4th through the 11th, and I was reviewing your rates and special deals on your website. I came across the 3 for 2 special deal, but that included a bunch of golf extras and expenses I'm actually not interested in. Other guests who will be staying around this time, informed me that you offer this package without the rounds of golf. Is that something I can book as well?"

then you should be able to get a much cheaper stay. Thats what I did. so I basically got 2 free nights! Good luck! let me know if theres any other way I can help. Myself and Owen will, again, have a car that we'll be offering to help transport people back and forth to the class with. see you in a few weeks!

It seems that many of our members and guests are going to be staying at Xona Suites for the Animation Master Class on July 5th - 9th.
For this reason, we have moved the venue from our original location to a conference room in Xona suites for those dates. There are some advantages for attendees too. The catering director is sending limited menus for the restaurant during lunch break. In the mornings, attendees can choose a lunch from the menu priced between $8 and $14 and it will be ready during break-time so there's no waiting for meals.
I'll update the site today with the relevant information.

The class is not yet full; still a couple of openings left but we anticipate they will be gone by weeks end.
The class size is small so you will have one-on-one instruction from Mr. Bluth. The course is designed for every level of animation. You will learn professional tips at this class that you will never learn from similar courses offered. What more needs to be said? The weather is good, the other attendees are students/professionals eager to learn new things directly from Mr. Bluth.

Xona is a short distance from the original location; 2-4 miles maybe. You can Mapquest your hotel to Xona suites and it will give you distance.
The original location had no shops/restaurants to buy lunch or snacks and seemed difficult to navigate to. Xona is a much better location for all and it's close to the new Kirkland shopping district.

..that is great news Dave! Thank you and Mr.Bluth for your thoughtfulness.
Upon reading your post a quick question popped in my head...do to the fact that throughout this masterclass we are going to be assigned a short scene to animate, are we required to bring a light table (I don't own a portable one) or any other type of other animation equipment (paper,..etc) to the masterclass? ... or these equipments are going to be supplied though Mr.Bluth by the hotel?

I think there's much less reason to have a car now. What to people think? Do you still think we would need one?

We could rent a van, but I think with having the venue at the hotel we will want to spend more of our time animating and try to minimize anytime away from that. This means that we will have to cab it from the airport to the hotel and once again when we need to depart. If you wanted to travel around town, the shuttle from xona will take you in a 5 mile radius, and you could cab it from there.

And yeah, I was just talking with Owen about this.. I think it's about the freedom- and not being forced to deal with the insane heat. Or insane cab fares. We probably won't want to walk around for 20 minutes to eat and such. But I'm also about saving money.. and we defintiely lost the biggest reason to need the car..

Myself and Owen were going to sort of act as the animation class cab (except with mostly going, "hey guys, we're going to go to ______, wanna come?"), But do we even need to anymore?

But do we even need to anymore?

Although I expect most of us will just want to hang out, draw and chat having some form of transportation to escape in the cool of the evening is a good idea.

Has anybody thought about dress? I've never been out that far West before. I'm guessing I should bring shorts and sandals?

It will be touching 110 degrees or more during your visit to Arizona during July. I suggest you dress light, that is, shorts & t-shirt or summer dress or skirts with t-shirts for the girls, or if you're so inclined. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER, EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT THIRSTY!!!!! The resort does not enforce a strict dress code since it's a golf resort. There's several pools on the premises and all the rooms are air conditioned. You cannot wear swimming attire in the restaurant and shirt and shoes are also required in the dining area. The only saving grace during your stay is: it's a dry heat. You'll know what I mean when you arrive.

Seth

If anyone knows of some good used book stores in the area I'll need to check them out. I tend to learn my way around new places by finding all the bookstores in a town.

Added: Will be glad to assist with people getting to the Xona but first have to figure out where it is myself ;)

I've made a little summary here.

Master Classes: July 4th - 9th
Location: Xona Resorts Suites
Time: 9 A.M. - 2 P.M.
Lunch Break: 11 A.M. - 12 P.M.

Materials are provided, but you can bring your own drawings mediums if desired. Dress lite and drink plenty of water.

I'm sure this didn't need to be said, but knowing the way things go in my life I'll probably show up at the wrong time! I just wanted to double check with everyone else to make sure I had this all right. Thanks.

If you show up on 4 July (at the Masterclass) you most definitely will not be showing up on time.

Ha ha, yeah I was wasted when I got here. I slept most of the day away. Anyhoo, you guys won't see me on spot at the Xona. I reserved my hotel along time ago that was closer to the original location for the Master Classes. I hadn't even realized they were moved to the Xona until a few days ago.
I'm staying at the Wingate Hotel, if you aren't doing anything the night of the 4th let's get some pizza or something. :D

Seth,
That would explain why I didn't run into you at the Xona. ;)

I'm not sure how early some restaurants may be closing for the 4th but I'm good with pizza. Maybe we can watch some fireworks.

Did you have any trouble getting up to the hotel?

If you follow Dave's instructions you'll get right to it!
I didn't have his instructions with me so... it took me a little longer.
Interestingly, if I would have had my glasses on I would have found it a lot sooner as I practically drove right up to it but didn't know. ;)
Didn't take long to find a bookstore!

I'm still wondering if a cab or a rental car is better.

Meredith,
Unless you've got the spare cash to burn or just really need the car for personal mobility, I'd say get ahold of one of us with a vehicle, we'll pick you up and drive you there.

I only rented a car for the convenience of learning my way around Phoenix.
I might as well be useful.

I'm going to activate a cell phone tomorrow and check in with Dave.
That'll make communicating go a little smoother.

All,
If anyone needs picked up at the airport tomorrow (Sunday) I'm available. For the moment you'll have to arrange the pick up here in the forum or via my personal email: rodney.baker@gmail.com

When in doubt call Dave! ;)

When I drive around I feel so lost, everything looks the same out here. Everything is brown including the buildings. And for some strange reason businesses repeat themselves around here.... a lot. I drove 10 miles down a main road and passed 7 McDonalds on the way. 7!

Yes, Seth, unfortunately, you found yourself in the sea of Sameness. Much of the area you found yourself in today was slapped together over the last 8-10 years when the building boom hit. The further you get out of the city the better it looks. If we have some time throughout the week, hopefully I can take some of you on an excursion into the desert. It wasn't until several hours after today's class that it really sank in... We just spent a whole day with Don Bluth.

Okay, it still hasn't quite sunk in yet.

For me this trip has been more than twenty years in the making, ever since I recall reading that awe inspiring interview with Don Bluth in Comic Scene magazine describing how he and his crew had taken their leap of faith, championed independent artists' efforts and revealed the heart of the animator inside us all.

Thanks for the opportunity Don!

Hmmm, I thought today was kinda quiet, it had a laid back feeling. We mostly concentrated on drawing Extremes for our scene ( I pretended to know what I was doing ) I learned that I have no clue how to use an X-sheet, hey, I'm getting better. I'm just glad Don has the patience for us, I'm as naive as an animator can get! One thing that was too cool was getting to sit at the same table with Don, and Dave at lunch.

Oh, yeah. Rodney wouldn't keep his eraser shreds off my side of the desk. And he stole my pencil......twice! ;)

I might have misheard what Don said yesterday but I'm pretty sure he said we can work at the animation studio of our choice after graduating... at least I think that's what he said.

It's also possible he might have said 'Get back to your animation tables!!! If you slackers are expecting a certificate... forgetaboutit!'

Not entirely sure about that.

Wow, what a week. Don gave us each a 3 to 4 second action scene to animate, and taught us how to use a layout and time everything on the x-sheet. We had access to a capture station and FlipBook Pro for pencil tests, with Dave helping us out on the computer. Don guided our animation every step of the way, suggesting improvements while allowing each person to add their own personality to the scene. The sessions lasted from 9 until 2 with a 1-hour lunch break, although towards the end of the week we started earlier. Many students did not want to stop at 2 and frequently worked late into the night (2 am!) in order to improve their scenes! "Animation boot camp would be an appropriate name for it, but I mean that in only a good way.

On Friday Gary Goldman dropped by with signed copies of Banjo and Dragon's Lair posters which we could buy as souvenirs. Don was endlessly patient with all of our questions and posed for many pictures, signed many books. He is very enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge and this has been the trip of a lifetime. There was much to be learned for everyone, from the beginning to the advanced student. I am very motivated to get my own lightbox and start animating on paper now. He is definitely planning more workshops, so please, please, do yourself a favor and consider coming out here to Scottsdale to learn from him! Start your savings account now!

Most animation exercises consist of a simple form like a ball or flour sack. Don had us animate a fully articulated bird hopping and flying around along with a moving camera! It was pretty intense but he was exceptionally patient and covered the confusing material (like x-sheets) in detail, more than once. Working under his leadership was truly inspiring as was working alongside some wonderfully talented and passionate animation students.

Also, we got to meet Gary Goldman today! What a super nice and approachable guy. He stopped by everyone's desk and talked with us as if we'd been lifelong friends. He had some incredible stories to tell. It was very cool. Plus both he and Don graciously autographed DVD's and posters.

For those on the fence wondering whether or not it's worth the time and money, I can emphatically say YES!!! Not just for the educational value but for the opportunity to meet and get to know other like-minded animation geeks in person.

Pics will be posted soon. I snapped a ton as did others.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the class, and it was amazingly different compared to what I've been learning at SCAD. Everyone improved dramatically throughout the week, and even students who had been doing animation for a while were learning things they'd never applied to animation before - such as animating to beats, or on a moving pan, which are both hard things to understand when taught over the internet, I think. Don tried to teach animating on a pan before for the cyber garage project, but it wasn't until he sat down with us, one-on-one, that I really understood what any of that was about. Same thing with learning how to use a metronome to visualize the timing of your scene.

Don and Dave felt more like close friends by the end of the week, rather than these huge animation celebrities which I've been dreaming of meeting for years. They ate lunch with us, sat around and talked about animation with us, and on the last day, a large group of us even went to Dave's Irish pub and restaurant!

As far as stories, students, and lectures go, Don spent most of his time during the lecture sitting at a desk and critiqueing, commenting, and drawing over student's animation as they stood in line to talk with him. Dave spent most of his time capturing everyone's scenes onto digicel. We weren't supposed to stay in the meeting room after the class was over, but eventually a lot of us ended up never leaving. There was one night we didn't close up until 3:30! We had gotten pretty loopy by that point.

Although Don had started the class saying that we only needed to animate 37 frames throughout the week, I don't think a single person's scene was that little. My scene got up to 145 or so, and I know Owen's was about 200 frames. Many of us animators took brakes by swimming at the hotel pool, and I made a large group of friends I probably would never have had the chance to meet otherwise. Some of us are already planning a second trip next summer maybe :)

End of rant. I'll be posting photos and videos later, but I'll put up a teaser:

Keep posting those pictures. Most of them I haven't seen!

Some of us are still in Phoenix area and I haven't yet got into the after-masterclass mindset yet. I'm still pretending I'm there. ;)

I do want to take a moment to say thanks to Don and Dave for giving us this tremendous opportunity.

It was a humbling experience and I learned a whole lot from being there.
It's good to get practical insight into the framework for storytelling through animation principles.

One particularly important lesson I learned... I need to work a lot harder at this animation thing!

I actually think that having all this experience made it more difficult because I had to try and un-learn what I knew from CG and come at it from a different angle. But don't take that as a complaint, it was a fantastic experience and I hope to try applying these classic teachings to my CG stuff :)
