I didn't go to the link but does this have anything to do with "Kimba the White Lion"?
I remember hearing 10 years ago how it was an atrocity for Disney to basically rape the characterization and the story theme of the once acclaimed "Kimba the White Lion" by Osamu Tezuka. They basically took something else and made it their own inmy opinion.
But that's just me....

I followed the debate on this awhile back and I certainly saw the similarities.
Here's how I resolved the debate... for me.
Watch 'Kimba the White Lion'.
Watch 'The Lion King'.
See if you don't see two completely different movies. (Kimba was originally a series but was recently released as a new movie)
There are still a lot of similarities (there are only so many animals in Africa) and it's likely Disney originally was spinning up to produce a new 'Kimba' but that's really where the differences depart and meet.
The songs/music ultimately are what really separate these two movies. If the two were ever the same, Elton John's music and its effect on the story completely and utterly divorce them. Ergo, they are in no way the same movie.
Edit: There is another important distinction I don't recall reading. In Kimba (especially the animated series) the characters are mostly people in animal bodies. In Lion King, the characters where animals with human thoughts, speach and feelings.
Also: I prefer the Kimba manga/comics. They are pretty deep. Much more serious than the series.

even if Disney did rip off kimba I still feel that Disney did a far superior job with it.

Don't forget Seven Samurai (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047478/) and The Magnificent Seven (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054047/).

I do recall hearing about this. It is hard to not see many similarities. So close that it is possible. I think like Rodney mentioned, you would have to actually watch both to see how close they really are.
On a similar note there is a story I have been toying with for a few years now. I have some sketches made up of some of the space crafts used. Low and behold I was watching an old show via netflix and a very similar vehicle is briefly shown. The kicker is I had watched this show many years ago. So the question is... was it coincidence or was I influenced.
Not saying this is the case for disney. But possible some of the writers had seen it.

Also I am sure this was just sheer luck that there were two balloon lifting houses movies came out in the same year :D

It is sad when a company does blatantly rip off another for money. This company is notorious for redoing all of Pixars.

I already new about this , and yes it is a extremely well done rip-off of the japanese version kimba! I read somewhere that it had actually been planned to be a remake of kimba but they discarded the plans to advertise that!
anyway , disney found a great story and conquered it I bet!
I am claw  .....no wait I am scar ! yeah this is funny and kind of insulting to the japanese I believe!
