Your cat drawing is pretty cool. Downshots are always difficult and you did very well to capture the feeling of a cat.

Well Klark ,you wanted a critique Ill give you one :D!
www.animationbooks.weebly.com , is where to start!
and begin reading "gesture-drawing-for-animation" because it could possible be the biggest eye opener book ever! from their I have learned that just drawing is not good enough! and how important life drawing is - not to mention sketching!
When you read this book, just keep an open mind about how you go about drawing and what you need to do is to start loose - sketch sketch sketch!
Like Don told us "learn your circles, their very important" - start off with a circular head! and circles for eyes! and then rotate the circle and the eyes! imagine a 3d sphere and rotate it! :D
your drawings are very good at where your at but you dont have the 3 dimensional look to them! to get this into your drawings you must practice your spheres!
Im sure most artists here started out with drawing spheres for heads, once you get better at it! then that 3 dimensional look will be completely natural when developing characters of your own!
:D
anyway hope this helped, but whats really going to help you become a better artist is your personal drive to become better!

By the way, I read through some of it and found something that's bothering me. It is not as much of a helping site, but more of an instructing site. From the very beginning you are told what to draw and how, with the emphasis on "what". I don't want to draw cartoon dogs! :p

I belive you are reading preston blairs book!, that book is really old and well times have changed alittle since then, but the basic rules still apply to everything you will ever do in animation! as these people are the masters of this art form!
the man is named Walt Stanchfield! he has trained alot of people! even Don Bluth himself was a student!
if you had to read only one book about art and drawing -this is the book! :D
http://animationbooks.weebly.com/gesture-drawing-for-animation.html
check out the link and you will be able to read about this man who is teaching even through his own book of notes! :D

No, I looked at all three. Yes, I was talking about the 1st one. The 2nd one is good.

There is now a 3 book series of all Walt's notes available http://www.amazon.com/Drawn-Life-Classes-Stanchfield-Lectures/dp/0240810961/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1271622597&sr=8-1 Animationmeat pulled their copies of the notes after it was announced the book was coming out. Out of respect for Walt's widow who is receiving the proceeds from the sale of the books.

I agree with you Richard, but those with more financial support that can pay for a copy of the books should definitely do their part and purchase them!
that being said, Im not trying to post a link to anything illegal! - but if just one person could learn something from a great man that had passed away, then I think its worth the post! - and his teachings continue

I always enjoy how you draw characters with foreshortening. It's very challenging to get right. Good work stepping up to the plate!

... what is foreshortening?
jeremyhopkins

According to Encyclopædia Britannica:
Foreshortening is the method of rendering a specific object or figure in a picture in depth. The artist records, in varying degrees, the distortion that is seen by the eye when an object or figure is viewed at a distance or at an unusual angle.

... what is foreshortening?
What Jeremy said. :)
I like to think in terms of the root words: fore-shorten-ing
fore - to the front
shorten - a decrease in length
ing - of a process
Through the act of forcing a perspective or artificially shortening a view on objects in the foreground of an image, the object can appear correct to the human eye even though if looking at the altered object realistically it might appear extremely or grossly distorted.
I also like your foreshortening. :)

The emphasis is on "attempted". Stewart Copeland was the drummer and founder of The Police. I'm only 20 and even I know that. History of Rock 101 :P

Hahaaahahahahaa....
The horse cracks me up.
I used to go in and add comments to my drawings in my sketchpad.
The characters would be saying goofy things and when I went back to check 'em out I'd forget the comments were there which would make it even more entertaining.
Good times! ;)
