It's hard for me to know where to begin, since I have so much different stuff.. but I'll kind of start with a small gamut.

But! my site is here for anyone that wants to see more.

Also, I'm doing a drawing every single day for 2010.. hosted up on facebook. You shouldn't need FB to view them.

so I made some introductary posts, then vanished! Sorry about that, I've been crazy busy. Had a few projects but primarily I've been working on my Website.. which is now overhauled and brand-spanking new!
http://lightningarts.com
I figured I'd pull a few things out from that to show.

By the way, in case people missed it.. I will be attending the Don Bluth Animation Class in July. I REALLY want to practice 2d animation again (it's been 10 years) before I go, but that seems more impossible by the day.. because I'm mind blowingly busy.
However, I at least do draw all the time, and I animate all day long on a computer.. so maybe that will count for something!

You sure have a distinct art style, I really like it.
NateHorsfall
06-07-2010, 01:41 AM
thanks lavalle! people have told me that before. And it's really interesting because while I know what they mean.. "distinct style", I also don't, at the same time. I've developed a style over the years.. but since it just sort of happened, I can't really put my finger on what it is! I even try to do new stuff and it ends up my "style" anyway. haha..
here are a few more.

The Masterclass video results:
http://www.donbluthanimation.com/videos.php?showvideo=396
There are good and bad things about this video. The bulk of my time was spent redoing the wings over and OVER. But it was a wonderful experience nonetheless. I'd really like to finish this some day, but.. I need a proper scanner and some animation paper before that happens.
Not included: the actual pan move. This will also come later.
How come I never saw this thread before? Eh, oh well.
Did you really do the CGI for all those video games? They're really impressive I must say!
Is that a real fighting game you made?
Love the female dragon character. What's her story?
NateHorsfall
07-13-2010, 10:04 PM
piece by piece :) :
1. Yep! I'm a CG animator. Well, thats my job at least. I do MANY things aside form that, but thats where I get income for the time being. I learned 2d in school- but nothing like that Masterclass we just went through!
And thanks! I try. many o those are on really tight schedules. So we do the best we can.
2. Nope, it's a fake videogame and still unfinished. It's so hard to do stuff like that on the side. But I haven't abandoned it yet! you can see more on fvr.homestead.com
3. Thanks! Thats Lily, Fox's (the blue dragon) sister. Her story is actually fairly complex, but the simple version is: A former Magician's assistant in stage magic and master of hypnotism on the side. After many years of this and the eventual divorcing from the magician, Vladwick, Lily puts her hypnotism and stage acts aside to try and learn real magic. When doing this, she ends up settling back with Fox and many others within the guild they're all from (FotHB), making new friends and a new love.
Of all my characters, Lily is similar to MJ (the Kangaroo) in that she's not a combative type of character. She HAS the ability to do so, but is very unsure and nervous to use it. For awhile, all I made was combative characters.. so it was nice to try other things. Also, she's the only one that actually gives a damn about fashion, so thats fun to draw too :)
So do you have any fully colored pictures of Lily? I'm guessing she has blue skin like Fox?
NateHorsfall
07-14-2010, 08:02 PM
Nope! thats where it's tricky. she's actually white. So that colored version of her in the "punk gypsy" outfit as it's come to be called, is her in full color. :)
I have more pictures OF her though.
http://lightningarts.com/Lily.html
Ah ok. My mistake. I thought maybe you were going for some kind of color style, but it's just that she has white skin. I get it now!

Hey thanks everyone! Means alot :)
my stuff is often messy as hell. it's just the way i draw.. fortunately sometimes it comes across as more alive that way, but sometimes I wish i was cleaner. heh.
And so the latest thing I made tonight. NOT clean.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs213.snc4/39010_142357072452347_100000341659575_297843_26834 67_n.jpg
Lily is not a combative character, but when she needs to be.. her look changes. Simpler clothes, gloves, hair back. Then i shaded it all crazily for kicks.

Tonight I saw Porcupine Tree.. it was awesome (3 hours of awesome. wow) but they wouldn't let us film or take pictures! At one point I saw him do this pose I really liked.. and without camera, I just made a damn hard effort to remember it. This isn't exact, but pretty close!
Then I decided to be all crazy and color the whole damn thing.
Total time: 1.5 hrs.

You should go crazy more often, I really like the colors!
1 thing, i cant tell if his guitar has a strap, or is it floating :)
Good to see more of Lily! I think your messy style is what makes you different from other artists. So I would go with it.
The guitar one is great. Awesome use of colors.

Yes, i almost always forget the strap when i draw... and I tried to add it in actually, but the angle of it actually WOULD hide it. because it's on the shoulder behind the guitar. But yup, common problem! haha.
Thanks guys! this was fun to do :)
And don't worry, my messy style won't go away.. though when I complain about it, it's because I like to not always do the same thing and experiment! Haven't had the time though lately. next week i'll have lots more cool stuff.

Tonight, I sat down for like 4 hours and drew on Open Canvas with my friend Ali. you guys really have to join me on this, sometime. or coordinate.. theres nothing like drawing in real time, on the same picture, with another artist!
It's a free program, super easy, zero installs.. theres no excuse!
Anyways..
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs252.snc4/39922_144367282251326_100000341659575_306210_21264 44_n.jpg
This started entirely from me making some diagonal blue lines.. and Ali picked up on what I was doing! And it spiraled out of control from there. This is why OC is so great :)

This is also why OC is awesome. Total goofy random stuff like this can happy. And it's nothing but laughs the whole time.
Ali started sketching a cliff just to kill time really, and then I decided.. hey, great time for me to draw Fox flying! But then he made a CAR.. so i changed it completely. Glad I did! It's nice to draw a dragon that ISN'T Fox.
And then.. i thought it would be funny to totally contrast this terrifying thing, with people totally nonplused about it. :)

nice works Nate!
The guitar player is my preferred artwork so far! The colors really convey the roaring sound of a rock concert (unless the guy here depicted actually plays progressive jazz or smooth melodic polka, ... I don't really know his music)....great pose and love the wild brush strokes as well.

More experimenting tonight.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs311.snc4/40902_144637828890938_100000341659575_307402_40099 66_n.jpg
It was late, I was doing sketch-a-day, and.. i decided to try something different.
Experiment: Make a character drawing without skeleton, without form. and without connected lines. No Erasing. This was pretty interesting. and obviously way stylized.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs158.ash2/41219_144639245557463_100000341659575_307405_67850 42_n.jpg
After the lines sketch, I decided to try a weird way of coloring it, too. no detail, just vague blotches. And using the background as the "medium" shade.
jeremyhopkins
08-14-2010, 10:08 PM
Really interesting linework! Again, lots of vitality but you're simplifying shapes without loosing the original energy. Nice to see the experimentation with new ideas!

NateHorsfall
08-15-2010, 10:45 AM
Jeremy: Thanks! Yeah it's fun to experiment like that. Made me wonder how such a thing would look, animated. It could be done, too.. Just basically do that as a pass for the "clean up".
AJ: oh thats just wacom fooling around. Flicking the pen around. nothing special :)
Heres another in the same style:

Heres the animationy drawings as promised. For those in the session today, you got to see Don draw right over these. so Guess what? I'm going to redo them i think later on. But still, worth posting.
These are a few of me just trying out some exaggerations and different methods of drawing. More experiments than properly planned out poses and such.

Today I decided to watch all the don bluth DVDs i got, finally.. and all the videos online. With all of this on my mind, I wanted to do some sort of reactionary drawing.. and after thinking about it, I came up with the comical idea of pairing my various characters up with others that would never work. First of this is Red and MJ.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs360.snc4/44361_146570412031013_100000341659575_318024_26763 24_n.jpg
I'm actually pretty happy with how it came out. except Red's foreground wing. I couldn't think of a better spot to draw that.. but i'll probably redo it later.

More Alexis. And Kantai this time! Ali started drawing Kantai is some action pose.. and STILL being on an Alexis kick, i decided to make it like a cover shot, or something.
I really pushed Alexis' pose on this one. TOO far, really. But I rarely go far enough, so i'm happy with overdoing it.

So tonight, single player stuff again. I had a life drawing session for 3 hours after work. It was great! I also approached this differently than any other time I've done life drawing. Instead of trying to make it look real, i focused on shape, character when possible, and flow.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs188.ash2/45158_147592731928781_100000341659575_323135_50260 16_n.jpg
these were about 2 minutes.
so that first one.. NO, there was not some guy doing this to her. but she got into a pose that could have very easily been that way.. so I exaggerated and added someone else. Don't read into it!
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs368.snc4/45158_147592738595447_100000341659575_323137_10591 38_n.jpg
because of the fact she had to hold a pose for 10 minutes, they mainly involved just sitting there or something boring. I tried to have fun and give them character where it was possible. she was never smiling. Just emotionless!
the bottom one with the hands behind the back is actually a 2 minute.

during these boring sitting poses, i decided- out of boredom for myself, to do a mini animation. only got to 2 poses.. but hey, the second was completely made up!
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs368.snc4/45158_147592735262114_100000341659575_323136_14094 35_n.jpg
interestingly, I enjoyed her posing when she WASN'T posing. When she started tying her toga thing back on, and just acting natural, i loved those. We were not really supposed to be drawing her during this, but I did it anyway :)
Because of that, and the fact she was always moving, I can barely call these 30 seconds.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs188.ash2/45158_147592745262113_100000341659575_323139_36997 6_n.jpg
30 minutes means full drawing with shading and stuff. I started to get bored so i sketched in the actual environment. This was at the very least, one weird pose to draw!

Yeah, Amanda and I have been working together since late 2007. Occasionally, we do collabs or art trades with other people though. Hey! Maybe we could work on something together some time? That'd be really cool! :D
Haha! You know, Nate, the sketches I love the most of this set are actually the ones you did when you weren't supposed to be drawing her! :D I also like how you added in that second pose during the sitting poses, very innovative!

maybe we could! i don't know what of, but I'm always doing drawings. Mostly because of my sketch-a-day new years resolution. Sometimes it's little sketches. and sometimes.. it's stuff like this..

did this tonight. was only supposed to be a half hour, then bed.. but.. whoops! 3 hours later.........
So anything is surely possible ;)
Also, yeah i liked the natural ones the best. go figure, it's because they have life. not just robotic poses!

Very cool dragon picture. Were you perhaps inspired by Seth and I? It looks almost like something we would draw!
I know how that goes. You start drawing, not intending for it to be anything special... then you have to finish it at all costs, particularly at cost of sleep... especially if you have to be somewhere the next day! :D
Your style reminds me of comic books. It's very nice and actiony :) (If that's even a word :D)
NateHorsfall
08-28-2010, 12:10 PM
actiony is totally a word! Glad you liked it . and yes.. thats exactly what happened.. cost of sleep and everything.. :)
but I wasn't inspired by your stuff, haha. instead it was involving events around my week.. animating magic casting, and buying a flame sword..- no hard feelings though! It's just that I have had a few dragon characters- especially this one (for 12 years) that I tend to draw over and over and over. I've drawn this particular guy over 2000 times.. including full color, comics, 2d and 3d animation, etc. but still improving!

Now this is just AMAZING, Nate! Like Amanda said, it reminds of something straight out of a comic or graphic novel. The contrast between the black and white border and the reds and yellows of the dragon and his flaming sword just turned out wonderfully! Keep up the great work, man! Your Sketch-A-Day project is yielding some very impressive results. :D

The part where the dragon's belly is close to the screen when flying in the air is really cool. Caught your hand in there a few times too, lol.

I disappeared for awhile.. but don't think I haven't been busy... sorry for not getting back until now.
Seth- Thanks! Yeah people have told me I have a very comic book style to my work. I really like intense color and contrast, so thats a common theme :)
Lavalle- Haha yeah the hand shows up.. as you can tell, that was a REALLY long scene, so after I noticed that, I didn't feel like reshooting it.
The dragon flying by was probably one of the best parts.. and the birds.. that was some crazy stuff I was doing back then with NO understanding besides trial and error and teaching myself. After doing all the Bluth classes, i can't even fathom how I did those before! But i'm glad you liked it :)
Now.. new stuff.
1. Fusion Poster
Large version: http://www.lightningarts.com/files/Illustration/digital/Fusion_Sector1_Full.jpg
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/27f6a91ceb61c9d2743136690903a19b6g.jpg
This is actually NOT new. A few months ago a friend- and amazing musician, contacted me to do a picture for his song.. so this is what I came up with.
Song page: http://www.metroidmetal.com/songs/sector-1/
instant play: http://www.metroidmetal.com/metroid_mp3/mf/metroidfusion-sector1.mp3
The song is amazing, he's one of my favorite artists, and so i was thrilled to make this for him. If you listen to the song, I visualized the entire thing from the first roughly 10 seconds. but, when I was making it all, i left the song on loop the entire time.
Originally this was just for a banner on his website.
Then it became a wallpaper.. (stretching 2 monitors!)
and then? they blew my mind by showing it at their concert at PAX Seattle 2010.

2. Ridley Poster

Large version: http://www.mediafire.com/?cy3dzpsiiplln7j
After finishing Fusion, I really wanted to do a banner for every song.. but thats EXTREMELY time consuming, so I never did. I thought about it constantly however.
Well, after flooring me at PAX, I got re-inspired, and had to make it. and so we get this.
instant play: http://www.metroidmetal.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/metroid_ridley.mp3
Ridley I wanted to be almost the total opposite of Fusion's banner. Fusion was cold, foreboding.. I wanted this one in-your-face intense.
3. Forest Month:
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/d06b44bac0aafab6c8e7b92c04e913e36g.jpg
I do banners and other art designs for this incredible awesome website full of videogame arrangements and covers.. called dwelling of duels.
http://www.dwellingofduels.net/index.php
So this month's arrangement.. is forest month! Games with forest songs in them. I have done another forest before, in this style..
http://www.lightningarts.com/files/Illustration/digital/winter_sm2.jpg
So I wanted to revisit that. Also, I hate doing the same thing over and over, and this is a style I don't do much, so I wanted to play with it.
Forest Month has a ton of hidden references all over it.. To game references such as the Master sword from Zelda, Secret of Mana;s sprite character, Chrono and Lucca from Chrono trigger, a chocobo from final fantasy.. and even woodman's leaf weapon from mega man 2.
. And then music references like.. the path being piano keys, the bushes as drums, a rock (get it?) guitar. and an upsidedown flying V guitar for the tree angled like \

Speaking of shirts, I also have my own shirts which I either sell to people.. or give away if you're really nice to me.. :)

These are interesting, and they were only started for the sake of something fast for sketch a day.
You might recognize the style from a few pages back, where I did it with my bird. Well, this time I just drew right over the top of photos with blotches of color. Specifically, I lay down a base tone (the background color near the black) and then I draw the shadow areas with black only, then highlights with a lighter version of the background.. or something else if I feel like it. And THEN, I just roughly scatter black all over the background until i get something that looks to represent the person i'm trying to convey.
1. Geoff is a computer guy, so he's all 1's and 0's
2. Art is an FX wiz, so i made an explosion around him
3. Van is a bassist, so.. bass thumping!
I'm going to expand on these and do even more of them. People seem to really like it, and they're surprisingly fast to do. Only about 20-30 minutes per each.

Haha.. thats fine, Seth. No worries ;)
Thanks both you and Jeremy! BUT! Don't be afraid to pick at it, guys. You, or anyone else. PLEASE give suggestions how to improve. draw over it, redraw, show reference examples. anything.
I just browsed about 13 galleries, and I saw over and over: "great work!" with little to zero criticism. I'm guilty of this as well, because who wants to upset someone? But really, I can take it. And in fact would prefer it even more than praise all the time :)
But if you just flat out enjoy it, well! the praise is cool too, I'm glad you enjoy the diversity!

Wow. it's been 2 months? As usual. I've been busy! I expected to have time as soon as the last animation class ended. but then my contract at EA got extended.. soooo.. so much for that! Before I get into everything I've been doing. Some INCREDIBLY late comments:
Red: thanks, guys! this one turned out luckily alright, since it was kind of thrown down at random. I can tell you though, I feel a huge improvement with the drawing since I started on these forums and with Don's feedback. So thats a really good feeling!
Lavalle: thanks! I don't know if you're into metal at all, but if you are.. you should get that contra CD. not only does it come with some pretty sweet artwork.. the music is.. amazing.

I felt a huge improvement with this both from the master class in Arizona as well as just, overall much more confident. Really, the biggest problem for me was sheer time to work on it. I did this while handling a full time job AND CDs like the sonic one I posted.. so it was just, really tough to fit it all in. I wish I could take these classes when not working, because I feel like I could really turn out something awesome then. But, for what I was able to do. I'm happy with it! Thanks again to all the other students who provided lots of feedback! Helped out tons!
And. Surprise! I'm taking the character design class too. Plus, i'm dragging my brother in with me, this time. Fun stuff!
